There is no wait. Only an authorization check which is done at the shop that is a participant in the student purchase program (B&H, Freestyle are two of note). Then the student walks out with the M9 if it's in stock.

I thought I couldn't do it as well. I have been unemployed for over a year, doing some freelance here and there. I sold a lot of unused film equipment in the last couple of months. I have a lot more to clear out. It was the only way to finance this. A good portion of this was financed by the sale of my M7 and Toyo 4x5 field camera. I figured it was now or never!
i think it's a good question to ask--but not so easy to answer ... at least not for me. as some have intimated, it's a question of who was handling the camera and how ...
