is that really true/// and, even if it is, why is that a problem[from the original question's point of view]///

[/=question mark; sorry shift does not work]

Perhaps there will be run on wide angle lenses on ebay?

lol nude photography with bessa L and 12mm superwide

by the way, the best nude photography i have seen [best = i liked it most] was not of thin young ladies... more in the category of jan saudek. Jim Adams on photo.net has a large gallery of simple shots of simple people of mixed ages, races and shapes, really good stuff.

As far as Americans go, many of us are overweight 🙁
Our society and popular culture tells us that in order to be attractive you need to be young, skinny, physically fit, and have good skin and teeth. On the surface, our society does not appear to value character or intellegence as much as it does good looks. Sad, really, most of the best people I know would never make it to the cover of GQ or Cosmo.

PS- This is not America bashing. I live here and love the place. It is pop-culture/advertising bashing.

Good Question!

Yes! in my early 20's for a close friend, but the only pic I have that I actually like is a photo taken in Boca Raton, Florida during a Duane Michals photo workshop in 1988.

A woman who was one of the students, asked me to take my shirt off and pose next to a tree with a bunch of thorns sticking out of it. I obliged, then everyone else in the course started taking pictures of me!!!! This attachment was taken by a friend at the time and has actually won awards! I'm actually quite proud of it!

As for taking photos of nudes. I have never really enjoyed it, and never got the results I've wanted.

In the past 3 years though, I've taken the odd life drawing course at the the Nova Scotia College of Art & Design and have found that I enjoy drawing nudes far more than photographing them. One nude I drew was of an extremely obese woman but she was surprising the most comfortable with her body and the most fun to draw

Anyway attached is the photo of me with credit to David Middleton

I was in the same boat about 30 years ago. Try milkshakes, (add bananas), protein drinks and beer. (Not in that order, not in equal amounts, and not at the same time) Also stop running and watch football and golf on TV on the weekends. You'll be back in shape in no time.

Round is certainly a shape not to be discounted 🙂

Clevername.. the overweight self-conscious problem is not limited to the US, you can find it outside as well, just not to the same degree.

I thought that's what you meant, but it works either way 🙂

You should be able to go in and edit your own posts, there should be an "edit" button right near the "quote" button.

Spell check would be nice, I always have to edit my posts.

ps-I just had to go back and edit this post :bang:

GAS and MAS

GAS and MAS

Not to overgeneralize, but here in the States, we tend to eat too much and exercise too little! As we hit middle age, it all seems to catch up with us. 🙁 As I now profess to be immune to GAS, I once thought I was immune to MAS (Middle Age Spread) until my last physical, when the doc was looking over my chart and the vitals. His exact words were "well, you're not overweight yet {pointing finger right at me} so don't push it!" 🙁

Here in the States and elsewhere I'm very sure, we're conditioned to try to at least appear to be thin and fit. Weight loss is a humongous industry here in the States. (Don't even mention cosmetic surgery and the like.) We have this image of a perfectly fit 20 year old, for both men and women, and yes, there is social pressure to try to look that way.

But back to the subject ... Now whether it's for artistic nudes, for artistic erotica, or for hard core pornography, that's the type of model that's in demand. People want to look at well-proportioned attractive people.

Don't even get me started on fashion and runway models! Those are not real people! 🙁 Jeesh!

But anyway, from a personal standpoint, I would not pose nude or even seminude myself whether or not I look like I did at 18.

And, although I am an avid people-watcher, I just don't have any desire to do nude photography, or even stuff like fashion shots or portraiture. Street scenes with people in them, yes, but ...

Each to his/her own, I guess.

Interesting thread, there have been some very good threads here lately! 🙂

I think posing people is a talent in itself, whether they're nude or not, and I've never sought out that kind of photography. But there was one occasion years ago when I was a member of a large urban photo club they hired a nude model and those interested had an opportunity to give it a try. I was awkward at first, and didn't know what to tell the model to do, so I just let her go through her own poses, and I'm pleased to say I went into "art mode" and forgot about other kinds of thoughts for the duration. I hurried to do the processing but as I recall there wasn't really much there that I liked. Interesting experience though...

Poptart, that's a good quote, it's in the right direction, but i think it's a bit oversimplified.

OK, i have a side-question. Are you living in a social surrounding where it would be unimaginable that you pose nude or semi-nude? I mean, would it have serious consequences on your professional or private life if you did it and 'they find it out'?
I do [ok...i DID - right now i'm blowin in the wind] and i have the feeling that most people here do.

Good question pherdinand, but I don't think many people are in danger of serious consequences if the photos are obviously artistic. Maybe some people who are part of a very religious community...

In any case, I doubt there would be any consequences at all for me if I decided to do it and it was done right. That said, I don't think I will be doing it any time soon...

The world (particularly the digital world) is saturated with nudity. In light of this, the challenge seems to me to be to take a picture that isworth viewing by strangers more than once. As to my own nudity, who cares . . . I have definitely reached the peeping-toms-will-be-sorely-disappointed stage of life.

Browse for Nahui Olin . One of Edward Weston's heads, I've always admired it. She was up front about her erotic career, theatric. He obviously knew what she was about, but I dont believe he shot her nude. Everybody else did. In Daybook I, Weston seems to breathe heavily about her, but she was occupied with "Dr. Atl", a painter. Weston was enviably-well-taken-care-of already. If you browse hard enough (!) you'll find her nudes by unknown photographers, taken in interests other than aesthetic. The others probably didn't share Weston's interest in vegetables.

i would in the right circumstances

artistic rather than exploitive

appropriate lighting

no semi or actual porn poses

i like the human form as an objet d'art
