The general concensus is: the bigger the camera the bolder I can get. Seems that people are less likely to confront someone with old fim cameras IMHO, especially when I carry two.
Nah, they just think you're some crazy tourist Cal!

I have found that an 18 for me is too wide, the 21 on the OM4 is fabulous, the 24 and 25 on F mount and RF mount respectively very useable but the way I see a scene before me the 28 does the job well, for me.

The 28 comes out once or twice an occasional year. The 35 only slightly more often. I get vertigo looking through a wide angle lens (wide is anything less than 50).

Sure, when I'm in the right mood I need not more than my CV 25mm Snapshot Skopar on a Bessa L. Best autofocus system ever invented and without any noticable wide-angle distortion. Very much fun.

The only issue I'd have with a 24mm being my only optic is that it isn't wide enough for most of my work. I'm one of those oddballs that likes really wide optics and the vast majority of my work is shot through lenses wider than 18mm.

I've considered doing a second `Leica year' with my 21/4 SA (first was with a 50 'cron). Biggest drawback is the relatively slow aperture (compared to the Summicron, still faster than many DSLR kit lenses), but for the rest I don't see much problems.

Last summer holiday in Austria, I had initially mounted a 50 on my Bessa, but found it too constraining after just two or three shots. Fortunately I had the CV 25 along, put that on the camera, and didn't take it off for two weeks.
The weird thing was, I had expected to shoot everything with the 50, as I had used that during most of a skiing holiday a couple of months earlier and found the 25 too wide at that time.
At the moment, I'm having a NEX/16mm which is 24mm equivalent as a carry all day camera along. The 24mm equiv. FOV sits perfectly fine with me..

I mostly use my olympus OM cameras with a 24mm (sometimes I use the 85mm, and rarely a 50 or 35mm). really like that focal length, perfect for vacation shots
On the leica i mostly use 28/50 cause i don't have to use an external viewfinder
