Would you send this RD1 back to Epson?

Well, this is my 2nd body and after looking at an ISO 200 JPEG I have found about 5 dead pixels! I see many here without this problem and I somehow have it again. This body is perfect as far as focus, Rf alighnment and EVERYTHING else. Just these pixels.

If I shoot RAW and open with PS CS they are gone. If I open with the EPson converter they are there. JPEG they are there.

Would you return to EPson for an exchange? I dont knwo if I should deal with it and just fix the problem in PS or go for another body? The 1st one was exchanged through B&H within a few days. Now it would have to go back to Epson.

For the amount of money spent, I would keep returning the camera until I was absolutely satisfied. But if you return it under warranty, then you may be w/o a camera for some time.

I looked at your picture, and I could not see any "dead pixels", although I'm not sure for what I'm supposed to be looking. I didn't see anything obviously wrong with the picture.

Is "dead pixels" a sensor problem? Does every digital camera have some degree of "dead pixels"?

View it at the original size, there are two big ones on the right side, and 3 small ones on the left. They appear in every picture now, at any ISO setting.

The two on the right (upper and lower) are very obvious. Ifyouview it at a smaller size you wont see them as clear.

If it were my R-D1 I'd just whip up a Photoshop action to auto-fix the stuck pixels. Of course people's tolerances of such defects vary. I wouldn't put up with a misadjusted RF but a handful of stuck pixels wouldn't bother me.

Mine has 3 big dead pixels MUCH worse that yours and a two small ones if it makes you feel better. I would like to know if anyone has a perfect body with absolutely NO dead pixels? Epson should just make a firmware upgrade for the camera that takes care of the dead pixels in the jpg compression and the same do the same for the RAW converter. I'm sure it's possible knowing that the ACR takes good care of the dead ones.

Yea, I actually decided to just keep it as its perfect otherwise. Id pbably get a worse on back and it doesnt bug me that much anyway. Im hoping Epson will release a firmware update or software update to take care of them. Thanks for the comments. I know Im not alone!

Are you sure it is dead pixels? I think it could be dust on the sensor since you say you have big & small spots.

Try cleaning the sensor & see if that helps the problem.

I see a few hot pixels at higher ISO settings but they don't stay in the same position from shot to shot. I agree Epson should be doing a better job of mapping out the truly dead ones.

They're not too bad Steve, my Fuji S2 has larger ones than yours. The thing with stuck/dead pixels... they sometimes fix themselves over time. Your problem really isn't that bad, you risk getting a worse unit if you plan on returning. I think the other issues like a miscalibrated rangefinder, misaligned viewfinder etc... are more pressing than a couple of small stuck pixels.

I haven't found any dead pixels on my R-D1 shots. No misaligned RF either.

Yoy know why? I got the camera tested before it was sent to me. Dr Yao did a good job and got me perfect specimen. Expwct Epson to do its best to produce an above par camera. Ask your dealer to test the specimen and get you a good one. IMO for the money the dealer is getting from your wallet you can demand a bit more than standard service. Don't always put the blame at Epson. The dealer has a responsibility here as well, as do you.

No bad ones huh? Wow! I doubt B&H would test them out before shipping them. As a matter of fact I know they would not do it. There are NO local dealers in AZ that sell the Rd1, so I had to buy it blind, through B&H.

The pixels do not really bother me so much as I can easily take them out, but it'smore the principal. BUT I will not be sending it back for fear I would get one that is worse.

Im happy and still love the camera. Also, do you only shoot RAW? Try shooting JPEG at ISO 400 and up and look at 100%, see if you have any.

PLus, the ones I showed were not dust as someone mentioned above. These are classic DEAD pixels. They are the same in every shot, they do not move. Ive had dead and hot pixelson other cams. A Fuji S2 had 1, and my D100 had 1 as well. My Oly E1 had TWO but after the pixel mapping it got rid of them for good.

Dust looks totally different and I do have dust if I shoot at F22. I tried it and had about 8 or so dust blobs.

But its not seen at anything lower than F22 so far.
