Electronics first. Then hand carry items that looks precious in the display cabinet or drawers.
Best choice are things that appeals to many kind of peoples, and antique camera might not change into cash fast enough.

So I am on the lucky side: my cabinets display only old hp calculators, model cars & old cameras. 🙂

At least hereabouts, the typical everyday thief will only grab cash, gold, credit cards, brand name watches and Apple iOS devices. If any, he is more likely to take along the TV (if big and new enough), brand name clothes or even copper gutter than a film camera - pawnability and second hand value among his peers being the key. A few experiences attempting to sell or pawn a film camera will already have discouraged him regarding the entire genre...

my house was broken into about 10 years ago and the discriminating thieves took my TV my VCR and a old Minolta SLR they left behind the Leica Standard that my uncle brought back from WWII that was sitting on a shelf about three inches above the VCR. A couple years later got married again and moved to a small town and once again my house was broken into, you could see by the dirty foot prints that the thief walked by the entertainment center a couple of times but they did not want any of the old cameras displayed there. (two Leica, two Contax, two Rolleiflex) Now I keep everything locked up.

p.s. Do folks in Canada leave junk on the curb on trash day... hopiNG someone will take it away? Here in CA the fastest way to get rid of such junk is to haNg a sign that says "$50... leave your money under the doormat". That stuff gets stolen/taken a lot faster than the same stuff with a sign reading "FREE - TAKE IT AWAY".

Maybe you should put a sign on the box saying "VALUABLE STUFF - STEAL ME FIRST".

Theives come in all sizes and flavors. Some come and go straight to the refrigerator as they 'know' thats were everybody hides their money. Others 'know' money is always under the man's underware. Some 'know' women hide their jewelry in a fake soda can. They will look in the place they 'know' is good and either leave or try to spot something valuable in a short amount of time. Most will not stay in a house long and will bolt at any sign they think means their breakin has been discovered; an alarm, telephone call, knock on the door, whatever.

Some theives will look for one thing primarily, others for another thing, and some will grab stuff they just hope they can turn for money.

But I like your engenuity. If you get the right kind of theif, it might work.

When I was in college some neighborhood kids broke into my parents home.
They took a Nikon FM with 50mm lens from my camera bag, leaving several far more valuable lenses inside.

find a better hiding place. False wall at back of closet. in the linen closet with sheets in front. In the toe space under cabinets.

Leave some money to be easily found and some old cameras in easy sight.

Around here thieves look for money, jewelry, small electronics, tools, guns and prescription drugs. The cost of TVs has fallen far enough that the work to carry one off hardly makes it worthwhile.
