When I worked for a camera store in Philadelphia in 198x, one of the outlying branches ( in a mall...) had a guy come in wanting to sell two old cameras, one of which was 35mm. The manager of the store said "I don't recognize these, so , sorry I'm not interested". One of the sales assistants said: "I need an inexpensive 35mm, how much do you want??"

And so for $25, he purchased a dial set Leica Compur. I know this for certain because I have held the camera.
