...thinking about a 35mm f2 planar for my contax g2...have the 28 & 45 & love 'em!

i have been mainly using a pre-asph 35mm f2 summicron on my m-6 for about 14 - 15 years & got more attuned to that focal length than i realized until i got my g2 kit.

seems some posts don't give it good marks and some do...my question is : at wall print sizes up to 11x14, and sometimes 16x20, will i get "reasonably" - now there's a term - equivalent results to those from the summicron? and what about at 8x10?

i realize it's a matter of personal preference and everyone discerns these thing differently, but i would appreciate all insights and comments. kenneth

The planar 35mm f2.0 is one of the best 35mm f2.0 lenses!. Full open contrast and sharpnes are not so high as with the 45mm planar. But very soon improves at very very very high levels. That is already at f4.0 you'll get wonderfull results edge to edge sharpnes high contrast and no distortion. I wonder if all the people who judge this little lens have used it at all! I know only one better 35mm and that is my 35mm f1.4 distagon. That one is sharp and contrasty at even f2.0 ! But that's a complete other lens not only in size ! I think leica user also know a few examples of a good 35mm ;->

Hard to compare a lens you have to a lens you haven't 🙂

I think it took me a year or two to hunt down a reasonable priced Planar 35 for my Contax G and I'm very happy with it.

There are some nice examples of what one can do with this lens over at www.contaxg.com

I don't shoot wide open so much and mostly my subjects background is out of focus so edge sharpness is not so important for me.

I must be a contrarian, because after hearing good/bad contradictory opinions about the CV 50mm Skopar, I bought a used one. After hearing controversial views of the 35mm Planar, I bought a used one of those too. Both are fine lenses that I can "defend" with examples. The 35mm focal length is just too useful to do without. Here's a sample shot at f/2.8 as I recall, and a full-res crop of the scan for closer examination...

...thank you jaap, socke & doug...your insights, suggestions and examples are very helpful...i am leaning more towards buying one and may just have to see for myself. kenneth

Ive got one in the box with leather bag...both front and rear caps and manual.

THis lens has been used for about 8 rolls of film its minty shape.
Make me a reasonable offer...check what they sell for on KEH in mint shape or ebay selling prices, of course I will sell cheaper than both places.

Hi

I was the one guilty of starting the yucky Contax G 35mm thread. In the time since, I've realised that I was unfair with the lens. Wide open, it is still extremely sharp. The problems I had with vignetting was easily solved by REMOVING an ill-fitting lens shade. Since then I have not had problems.

One other excellent performance issue is the very low tendency towards flare.

I still prefer the 28mm though...

Nick
