seems cheap to me, IF you get the one ine the picture and the front element is undamaged.


I think it's a screw thread, but that doesn't matter much, and what does category "bargain" mean ?

Usually "Bargain" means more than average wear. KEH does not show the picture of the particular lens for sell. However, they usually note cleaning marks or haze. I would call them up and talk to them about the particular lens if interested.

And Brett, Jesus would not have these problems of having to select a superior lens. He would just pick up any Brownie Camera laying around loaded with out-of-date Verichrome Pan and get first-rate color wedding photos as a favor to his Mom.

If the buyer is newish to buying leica stuff, perhaps another method is to buy from an experienced RFF member who has a surplus.

Otherwise don't try to shave the price too much and buy from a dealer with a known good reputation and a return if not satisfied option.

It's more important to buy the right lens than to "save" $100

good point, Brian.. and I suspect Jesus never had the problem of poor lighting

Hektor, the one thing I've never been accused of is going cheap.. I agree that it's better to spend the money once and never look back.. but it's important to know your options, too
 
KEH can be a good source as their "bargain" stuff often is quite a bargain. They are very good to deal with, call them and ask them to describe the item to you, what is making it a "bargain" and trust that they are telling you the truth, they will.

You already have the lens you need - the J-8. It's an LTM isn't it? What's wrong with that - I use one on my M6...

 
Nah, you've got to mix them up or life would be boring! You have a stereo system with all components made by Sony or Matsushita or whatever? I absolutely don't want Leica lenses in certain focal lengths - am I going to go without?

exactly, Jan.. I fully anticipated a very clear concensus that would make my question seem silly for even considering it at the onset

but seriously, I do appreciate all the advice.. I'm still slightly up in the air about it.. perhaps because I'm not sure what price range Summicrons are at these days

They don't have a great selection right now, but keep checking back. I called and dealt with the owner, Sandy, seemed like a very nice man.

Rigid, ebay $375, Very very nice condition. Watch the auctions. I have seen that the closing prices very quite a bit. Find a good one with a seller who fits your criteria of trustworthy and then snipe, or bid as late as you can, but only up to the amount you are willing to pay. $375 was my limit and the bid stuck (well I actually bid $377.76 probably figuring a last second sniper would throw in $375).

A DR, I paid bust out retail, the lens was recently CLA'd and included the eyes, well maybe just a little less. Without eyes you should be able to find them less than $400.

The version that Brian points out, $400 is a decent price. Range of $400 to $500.

The tabbed Summicrons, are actually the most expensive on the used market, and the current ones are unpredictable, some sell for $500 others for $800.

These are all prices for good user lenses with clean glass. No prom queens in the bunch, but the ones you want to spend some time with.

Keep an eye out on Photo.net. Some of the best deals come up there, you just have to be lucky to see it first.
