Hi All,

My first post here :)

I've come from a dSlr background (sold off all my Nikon bodies and 2.8 glass and gone lightweight = whew !)

I am just getting into the X series of cameras and have a X-E1, 35mm and a 18-55mm Zoom.

A feature on the X-E1 has me a bit puzzled, the Function button is programmable to be associated with a specific facility eg. ISO, Image size etc. The Q button seems to offer this but has alot more features to choose from.

Am I missing something or are these two buttons (Function and Q buttons) almost identical in outcome except one offers one feature to change and the other offers lots of features to change ?

I hardly ever use the Function button but use the Q Button all the time.

If there are other facilities with the function button can someone tell me ?

thanks in advance :)

The function button offers direct access to whatever you choose, for faster access. On the x100 I had it assigned to ND filter, so that I could turn it on without even looking at a menu. The Q button is a different concept.

The function can be programmed from a limited selection of possible well used functions. The default is to change iso. The q button was designed to access a wider variety of most used functions w/o going thru and searching thru a possible complicated menu system.. Basically a set of shortcuts to well used functions.

A function programmed to "fn" should be for your most used and provides fastest change capability. The q button gives secondary well used functions their place versus te menu system where there are things u will not change again once setup once, but u still need to look thru everything.

Thanks for the responses guys,

The reason I dont use the Function button at all is that when I change shooting "modes", I always seem to change more than 1 facility. The X-E1 Function button can only be assigned to a single feature at a time eg. ISO

I use Q button for all multiple quick changes as I tend to change ISO, Film Simulation, Image Size as a "set of changes". I've become quite adept at making these changes quickly (after about 1,000 images of practice :) ). I do use custom settings already too, but you'd already know some scenes require special sets of settings that are more one off - not worthy of creating a custom setting for.

I can see your point though, and I guess the Function button would be useful if making just a single change.

Thanks again.
