I don;t know about the XP-1, but if it operates like XE-1, that would have been caused by the "silent Mode" being switched on. I found that out under "Troubleshooting" in the User Manual, although the text under "Silent Mode" did mention this in passing.
Just disable the Silent Mode and you should be OK.

don't know what to tell you. Perhaps the X-P1 doesn't operate exactly like the X-E1. I only have the latter.

I went to the Drive button/menu and although it was on single shot, I cycled through the various options. I then returned to single shot and, voila, I can now shoot flash. I guess the firmware just got hung up somewhere, but now it works.
I have been using 3rd party flashes; i.e., Metz 54MZ-4, and Nikon SB22 in the auto and manual mode. They work. The image results are good.
However, in the X-Pro-1 main menu, tab 5, the flash mode is still grayed out although in the Q menu, it does show a flash symbol. But I cannot cycle through the various flash modes in the Q menu.

I suspect someone decided that w/out detecting a flash present, why worry about any config info would be my guess. That may also explain diff in behavior between xe1 and xp1, since there is a built in flash in xe 1.

Possibly so. I just sent an e-mail off to Fuji tech support asking them that same question; i.e., does the X series Fuji flash have to be attached to access the menu? Hopefully, I'll get a response in a few days. They're pretty good about that.

Yeah it does. Flash needs to be on there to get to the menu as there is no built in flash on the xp1

I forgot about the X-P1 not having a built-in flash. But yes, I think that may be the one (or even one of the) reasons. On my Canon G15, I had to pop up the built-in flash before I could make changes to the flash settings.

I think you broke the code. Thanks. I'll take my relatively small Nikon SB22 and think about the dedicated Fuji flash for a later purchase. The SB 22 gives reasonably good results set on automatic. Not TTL, but still pretty good.

QUESTION OFFICIALLY ANSWERED:
I just spoke to Fuji by phone. Flash mode only becomes active when a dedicated Fuji flash is attached. I also asked about silent mode and what it is for. It was intended as a "museum mode" where neither camera sound or flash is allowed. He agreed that silent mode is misleading, but that is what it is for. That is why flash is disabled when silent mode is activated. To silence the camera and keep all functions active, simply turn off the sounds volume in the menu.🙂
