X-pro 1 Yet another bug (video inside)

Yawn

Yawn

This is just more FUD about the XP-1.

Wait, I'm wrong. Yet another failure of the XP-1 is it doesn't support toy wireless strobe triggers. Send yours back NOW!

The trigger in the video seem to be the $33 Youngnuo rf-602tx units. At least a Goolge search for rf-602tx give hundreds of hits for the 2.4 GHz Youngnuo unit.

It does not suprise me at all the XP-1 generates radio-frequencies that set off low-cost triggers. Even harmonics could trigger a poorly shielded unit. It is possible the Youngnuo units even amplify the spurious r.f. from the XP-1. At any rate, the XP-1 passes the F.C.C. Emissions testing, so how strong can the extraneous r.f. signal be?

I just tried Pocket Wizard IIs with my XP-1. Guess what? Messing with the camera did not trigger the PW. I tried what was in the video. I turned the camera on and off. I did half presses using every exposure mode. I used my hand to repeatedly trigger the eye sensor circuit. The only time the remote strobe fired was when I pressed the shutter button all the way and the shutter opened.

Pocket Wizards cost $169. Could it be some of what you get for the extra money is a carefully engineered unit that won't fire when operated near other r.f. sources? Of course not. The only reason people pay $169 for PWs is because they stupidly insist on a brand name. Or maybe they are insecure and think their off-camera lighting will be better if they use the triggers most pros use. Why wouldn't a $33 trigger work as well? Don't throw your money away on those over-priced PWs.

Does Fuji or any other vendor have a resonsiblity to test it's products with every low-cost electronic accessory on the market?

Willie_901, I thoroughly enjoyed that rant! :D

So bottom line, problem solved - it's not the camera that has the issue, it's your cheap radio transmitters.
How many more of these 'another x-pro bug - it doesn't support the weight of my hummer' type threads are we going to have?

My question is more about how many X-Pro1 owners do / will use the camera that way. Not saying anything is right or wrong, just interested in knowing. My perception has been that some would not. I liken this to video, I'd never buy this camera with the intention of shooting video, just not the right tool, IMHO.

I never use a flash as I'm an available light photographer. I'm not saying I wouldn't have a flash for the rare occasion when I've no choice but to use one but I go out of my way not too as I prefer non-flash work and I've no use for a remote flash/trigger too.

Thank you for the reply.

Using off-brand junk accessories on your X-Pro is like using off-brand junk with anything else. If I pay close to $2000 for a camera, I expect that it will work well. Were I using $33 Chinese-made flash triggers, I wouldn't expect much, I would actually be surprised if they worked at all.

...X-Pro1 that suggest unrealistic expectations, some even comparing it to the M9, which in my mind is absurd. Seriously, if Fujifilm could match quality of the M9 at less than 1/3 the price then Leica would be screwed.

Well, as an owner of both M9 (for over two years) and an XP1 (for three weeks), my Leica "fanboy" status is in serious jeopardy.

Leica will always appeal to the "jewelry collector" crowd but for serious photographers, the choice of M9 vs. XP1 is now almost a no-brainer.

So, Leica "screwed"? Probably not -- but the M10 needs to be something pretty radically different then the M9 for them to keep up.

Gavinlg, such angst.... People respond, let them and ignore them if necessary!

I haven't actually tried my own flash triggers but I will now assume that they will work just fine after reading others posts!

You will NOT find a better X Pro 1 supporter than me. If you doubt it go check out my blogs on it!

Keep the faith, remember all of the negative comments on the X100 with its issues and imagined issues? That seems to had all ended. it will for the XP1 as well.

Mark, yeah you're right - and you use that x-pro1 in some really interesting ways.
For what it's worth I don't mind so much if people have complaints, but with the fujifilms it's more a case of people outright expecting them to have issues, so anything that may be user error is automatically posted straight on forums with sensationalist posts, and it just feeds the problem more.

Oh you are so right! There are some pretty seedy posts in the various forums. I look at them as from folks who have no clue what they are about and they only way that they can feel better is to trash other equipment! I laugh every time someone posts about returning theirs!

This particular post caught my attention due to one of my uses of the camera, but I didn't test it myself, rather I assumed that he had found a valid issue. The flash firing upon focus was a strange one!

Thanks for the response.

I'm considering the X-Pro 1 for the near future. My X100 certainly works for me despite its apparently being deeply troubling to some. So far, all the negative X-Pro 1 stuff doesn't alter my plans. I don't plan to use it with flash, video, hot shoe or any other extraneous "feature" that is included simply because it can be or because it might influence someone who adds up features to base their purchase upon.

I am truly grateful for Fuji making rangefinder-like digitals available, especially ones with clean, excellent files. My only concern with the X100 is that the built-in diopter range is insufficient and I have to wear my eyeglasses when using it, which I've never done before.

When I get an X-Pro 1 I can fit a corrective diopter to it and shed my glasses once more. Then, my only complaint will probably be that it's an interchangable lens camera which accumulate sensor dust!

I recently did a shoot with an X-Pro1 and the Pocket Wizard Plus IIs, and I had no problems whatsoever with misfires and I was tweaking my settings the entire time. I think the simple explanation is what everyone seems to have arrived at here. Cheap triggers and some radio anomalies in this camera just don't mix. Not Fuji's failure in design, just pure and simple incompatibility issues with untested third-party equipment.
