I would think that the next generation would use the sensor from the Sony A6000.
X Pro 2 to have APSC? And much more!

X-trans is Sony. The base sensor is a derivative of Sony's IMX071 sensor, which is also used in the D7000, NEX-6 and various Pentax DSLRs.
Toshiba fabricates the Nikon D7100 and D5300 sensor, which is roughly on par with Sony's new 24mp (A6000, A77 II).

I'm not sure it's going to be easy. Fuji may not have the funds to modify a brand new sensor, and Sony may not allow them to. The former 16mp base was not particularly new when Fuji adapted it in 2011 - if we see a 24mp X-trans in the near future, it might be the older, NEX-7 sensor and not the A6000 one.

From Fujifilm Group's 2014 Fiscal Report published on April 30, 2014.
"Operating income totaled ¥140.8 billion (up 23.4% from the previous fiscal year), reflecting such factors as increases in sales and positive effects of yen depreciation."
The question isn't whether or not they can afford it. The question is does the investment make sense to their Board.
Maybe Toshiba would "allow" them to do it.
note: To avoid any possibility of confusion or accusations of deception, the income above was for the entire Business Group. The still camera income is, as far as I can tell, buried in the Imaging Group's results. We know they took a hit, as all the brands did, because smart phones are killing inexpensive P&S camera sales. Just look up Nikon's stock chart for the past 12 months if you want to see a really sad sight.

IMO firms that don't have their own sensor fabs will always be at a disadvantage...Nikon seems to have some kind of priority agreement with Sony, so that they get access to chips before we see them on Sony cameras, but Fuji and Pentax have to make do with older designs.
I agree that the question is not one of affordability, but of profitability. Will a new sensor really offset the investment by increasing camera sales? If not then it makes sense for Fuji to stick with the IMX071 for as long as they can...

Yes. That's right. What was I thinking? I guess I had it mixed up with micro-4/3. I should know better, I have an X100, which is APS-C. Oops.

Still, it's not so small, is it? It's got to be a good camera--I love my X100, on which the X-Pro 1 is based. But it seems to me I might as well carry my M8.2, as the X-Pro 1 is not really much smaller.

Personally I don't want the X-Pro 2 to be any smaller, I love the current size (though do I wish the lenses were a bit smaller, the 14 and 23mm are pretty large for this system, not to mention the 56mm)
The biggest two features I would like to see would be improved battery life and faster AF (both I'm sure can and will be achieved).
After that, improved manual focus implementation (as others have said), weather-sealing and / or a more robust body (though mine has taken a few spills and isn't any worse for the wear). Even better high-ISO image quality (though I'm already quite pleased with ISO 6400). Dual SD cards would also be a nice touch. Oh and a better implementation of AF-Lock would be greatly desired, so I don't have to have the camera refocus every time I press the shutter. (It's definitely a workaround at this point since you have to be in Manual focus to really use it)
I just really don't want them to eliminate the OVF from the X-Pro 2. I would definitely like to see them push that hybrid finder concept even further. I was really pleased with the firmware update that improved the accuracy of the OVF framelines, made a huge difference!

Borrow an X-Pro and the 35/1.4 Fujinon, shoot the same pictures along with the M6 (even convert them to monochrome), and then report!

It's a lot lighter, has better high ISO res, can focus close, etc. though... 🙂

The thing that is hard to appreciate is how large the 14mm Fujinon is compared to the 21mm f/4.5 Zeiss. Fuji's lenses are not exactly compact, and newer ones are sporting monster 67mm and larger front rings. That makes life tough with an X-Pro.
