X-T1 Arrived

After playing around this morning, I have updated and expanded my comments on AFC mode. It really is radically different than previous X Series APS-C bodies.

Shot this set today with the X-T1 and the 18-55 kit lens:

Some brief observations for a days shooting with it:

1. It's no sports camera. IMO, it still can't compete with a DSLR for quick action.

2. Got over 800+ (RAW+Jpeg) images on one battery charge, and it still have more to give. I filled a 32gb card and the battery still read 100% when I changed it out.

3. Using "multi" for the AF mode, where it will choose anywhere in the screen to focus, the focusing was a bit laggy. You definitely want to use area focus (where you choose the point) if you want snappy focus. I also had selected the "release focus priority" to "focus", so this might have contributed to the lag.

4. I did shoot some sports type shots, but I didn't keep to the center PDAF points in my choice of focus point, so I can't really evaluate the continuous focusing performance yet.

I agree the XT-1 is not th best choice for serious sports work. However I think it the best Fujifilm X body is suitable for general action photography friends or family. It addresses concern about photographing children on the move. Of course you have to dean the manual to understand how to get the most out of AFC and practice. Oddly, I had to study and practice when I first used the D200, and 300 around active children.

Why are you guys buying mirrorless for sports? Just curious (and I'm not being rude).

I tend to agree with the sentiment.

However (and I'm not one of the testers), I interpret these reports as a form of stress-testing: "Camera X is not optimal for situation Y, but how far can you push it in that direction and get a tolerable response?" Something along those lines.

An interesting tidbit from getdpi today about improving af speed

This is a cut and past from getdpi thread about xt1 first impressions. Can someone try it?

------------ cut and paste ------------
I just got my X-T1 and have been playing with it today. I have not had a chance to try any REAL focus tracking shots, but did find two things really interesting. Turning on the "High Performance" mode under power management and also taking the size of the focus patch down really improved autofocus speed and accuracy.

The default is HP off and the medium focus patch.
