X10 - Permanently turn off screen?

I'm having an extremely confusing time regarding the screen on my new X10.

I have it set to "display off", and the camera will seemingly "remember" that setting, even after I turn it on or off.

However, after a long period of the camera being off (whether it turns off automatically or manually), the screen will pop back on in regular "display" mode.

Is this normal or is there something I'm missing as to how to ensure that the screen stays off 100% of the time?

Thanks,
Noah

It should stay off once you set it to off. I had a similar problem in which I could NOT turn it off! Someone told me that the screen will not turn off if you are in AF-C mode, controlled by the focus switch on the front.

And is it supposed to stay permanently off in ALL modes once it's set off, regardless of for how long the camera gets turned off or "times out"?

Thanks,
N.

I don't recall mine ever doing this but it's always been on AF-S.
You know the old staying about "If all else fails......."? See "Image Display" on p99 of your manual. I'm assuming that AF-C (continuous focus) sets the camera to what they call continuous shooting mode by default and thus cancels out the display setting you put in.
Try it on AF-S and see what happens.

Yeah, I knew about the "AF-C caveat" but mine's always been set to the correct focal setting to allow for the display to turn off.

My issue has been that the display seems to magically return to an "on" state after the camera's been off for a while or switches modes, even when I swear they're set to have the display "off".

If I turn the camera off and on quickly or within a few minutes, the display is still set to off, but eventually, like after an evening or a few hours, it seems to want to pop back on. The camera functions great and I don't see any other issues, so maybe I should just reset the whole thing to default and try it.

I just wanted to make sure that there are folks who have their displays off and they stay off at all costs. Is this the case?
Thanks,
N.

Are you running the upgraded software package v1.03 from February or the older v1.02?
Probably makes no difference though.
Are you sure that you're setting the whole LCD to "Off" and not just the Information display option in the LCD to Off? They're two different things and depending on whether you're using AF-S or AF-C you get different options when setting the display parameters.
My camera turns the LCD back on when starting up in AF-C mode. Doesn't do it in AF-S. Also does it when I switch modes from AF-S to AF-C whilst the camera is turned on..
It's never bothered me because I've found that jpegs out of the camera with it set on EXR and AF-S are all I need it to do. They're great!
If I want to "fiddle" I'll use the M6.

I just upgraded to 1.03 - Do you think that could be an issue?
I'm indeed setting the LCD to entirely off and I'm familiar with the AF-C caveat versus AF-S and M for having the display off. And EXR doesn't let it go off, right?
Sounds like there was or is some errant setting other than those obvious focus settings and the basic "display off" setting that is causing my camera to forget the display is supposed to be off.
