X100 improvements thread

The buzz on the internet alone for this camera is excellent, free marketing for Fuji's brand. Releasing the news of the camera early was excellent strategy on their part.

As far as the spray paint, I wasn't sarcastic. Final product is only as good as the prep time put in. There's no reason that these can't be painted.

Well ... we've waited this long for the camera and it's still not here so another six months for Shintaro to paint one shouldn't be a problem! 😀

I miss distance markers and a DOF scale on the lens! Right now it seems that you have to use the finder to focus manually. Or should I really use auto-focus? 😱
This. I was surprised that Fuji did not include a DoF scale.

Call me when it gets an M-mount and full frame sensor. 'Til then, it's just a tourist camera.

How about an M8? It has the resolution necessary to compete with full frame and they are pretty cheap these days. M8 is an awesome camera still.

The 1.3 crop sensor doesn't bother me at all with regard to the M8. It's the dang filters that are a pain.

The Focal Distance + DoF scale was known since Day 1...in the O/EVF where your eye should be, a world's first.

Sure that's great. When you focus while you look through the viewfinder, this should be even better than a SLR!

But sometimes it is nice to set up the camera without raising it to your eye to avoid raising attention. (Think Cartier-Bresson) The X100 should be ideal for this, because you can set aperture and exposure time without looking at the viewfinder or LCD. The problem is that you cannot scale focus the camera without raising it to your eye. The philosophy of the X100 seems to be that all essential Adjustments should be directly accessible without the need to stare at the LCD or the finder. That's why I wonder why they didn't care about manual focusing.

I could live without a DOF scale, but distance markers would be quite helpful. Maybe it will be possible to plug something on the focus ring?

I think the most important improvement they can make is to actually release the damn thing.

At this point in time, it just sucks. I haven't seen one good photo taken with this camera yet.

But maybe I am just too callous. There have been really nice photos taken of X100 pro-types. Isn't that all that Fuji's marketing department care about?

The LCD views shown so far do not display it, but maybe there is an option to show the DOF scale and focus distance on the LCD on the back? probably in live view mode for sure. That wouldn't require lifting to your eye to set distance.

Well, now that you say it... 😱 I think you are right, the LCD should be fine for that purpose. It even works in the dark. That and a a few pencil marks on the focus ring should do it.

There was a discussion about this, and while we didn't come to an absolute consensus, the general agreement was that pencil marks on the focusing ring will be useless. It provides rotational change info to the focusing motor, it is not mechanically coupled, and most likely does not deliver absolute rotation position. Pencil marks will correspond to different distances every time in this case.
