Ordered today and should get here from New York in however long the free shipping from B & H takes to Kansas. It said 8 business days but I hopes it's a lot shorter :D

May i ask what was the thing that made you decide a fixed lens of 35mm was the way to go... as opposed to the OM and FUji Pro or even a SLR?
It's one of the cameras on my ' if I go digital ' list. :D

It wasn't an easy decision for me.

I took the OM-D back as it had a focus issue that I think was related to a faulty lens. If it were more readily available then I might have tried another one.

I was really close to getting an X Pro 1. It was just a bit much for my budget at this point. I'm a lost curious to see how it develops as a system. The files are beautiful but I think there are some unanswered questions around the system (at least for me).

SLR, again really thought about it and may end up getting one in the future, but the problem is weight. I have a bad neck and lower back so 3 lbs of camera and lens to drag around was not the most appealing thought for me.

The X100 files I've seen are up there as some of the best I've seen. The OVF option and weight were also high up on the list. I also see it as a 'test' to see if I want to get the X Pro 1 later on.

I phoned the local store to see if they had one and they don't ... but the rep is comming in on Thursday and will bring in a sample for me to fondle and play with. I hope it helps me with my decision.
Roll on Thursday 1pm :D

Congratulations on your decision... I've followed your story regarding your bad experience with the OM-D with interest. It's a pity to have such disappointment.

Hopefully, you'll enjoy the x100. I've had mine for over a year, and I still love shooting with it. It's not perfect, of course, and you might find that you sometimes get a little frustrated with it, while you're learning its idiosyncrasies. With that in mind, I'd recommend that you give it a reasonable amount of time - I found that it took several weeks to get fully comfortable with it, but once I'd reached that point, I was hooked!

Make sure that yours has the latest firmware installed (v1.3), because the x100 has come a long way since the early firmware releases.

Good luck - I hope that it works out for you.

Glad to see you've reached a decision and I hope you're comfortable with it in the long term.

Personally I found the X100 too limiting in several areas!

I found a way to work around all the limitations but the one that i couldnt avoid was shutter lag. i shoot street a lot and sometimes when a shot suddenly appears, ill raise the camera up and when i review the photo later half the person is already out of the frame by the time the picture took.

i almost always shoot street nowadays so that was one thing that was getting me everytime so i sold it.

if you're shooting still subjects or ones that are easy to track then i would highly recommend it. the files are beautiful.

Good for you....I never carry cameras hanging from neck, only on shoulder or across shoulders when I don't carry in hand. Too painful and tourista looking is this neck thing. Personally I find almost no use for 35mm FOV but that's absolutely no criteria for others.

It's funny how little attention I paid to just what focal length I was using with the two zooms I had with my D40. When I went back to check focal lengths I shot at I was surprised that about 2/3rds of them were at ~35mm. I guess I'm just too used to the old 50mm film FOV.

you will like the light weight of the x100. it comes to hand nicely. i'm not much of a street shooter, so there is no focus issue for me ...

The x100 is currently my only digital camera. It's fantastic. There are no issues with focussing or shutter lag, and I do shoot a bit of street with it. You gotta use it the way it's designed to be used though - you can't just expect it to work a certain way and be disappointed when it doesn't. Much like the contax G's or the hexar AF (and my other camera is the contax G - and I like it very much also!)

The way to minimize shutter lag is to use a shutter half press. I do this in manual exposure, manual focus mode. It will work in other modes too (but you have to take other menu parameters into account). I do not use auto ISO or auto DR. When you half press the shutter the aperture gets set. Then the shutter delay is trivial.

I have just got to handle one of these little babies in the flesh and it's just as well I didn't have my credit card with me ... this camera is now top of the list of possibles, I will look at others just to be sure but it was nice.
:D

Not unlike any dslr I might add... half press 'primes' it, and there's actually less shutter lag with the x100 this way than many of the dslrs.

After looking at this camera I'm in exactly the same position you were after you returned the OM, of course I will learn from your error and not buy an OM !
The dealer has X100, X-1 Pro, Nex-7, Leica X2 and almost everthing else including a OM-D and lots of big slrs
Trouble is my head is all over the place and while i love the X100 i wonder if the Pro would be better long term or maybe I should get a R-D1 or even ... a 5D mk 1 and 20-35mm lens.
The only thing I know for sure is my next camera will be digital.

BGB, I wouldn't avoid the OM-D because of my experience. It is a great camera and capable of great images. Mine was just flawed and that could happen to any maker. Not that it helps your decision any.

BTW, after deciding on the X100 I... changed my mind and went with an X Pro 1. With some longer lenses on the road map it might just satisfy all my shooting needs for quite a while.

Keen to hear how the X Pro-1 works out for you, I had a look at it in the shop and it's a nice little camera ... when you have xxl hands like I do it's a little camera. Not sure about the extra $ but I think it's ok if I only buy one camera and stick with it.
Still like the big 5D Mk 1 and a 20-35 as I love wide glass, would come in at the same price as an X100, if i got 5D Mk11 and the same lens same price as X Pro body only.
Interesting times :bang:
