XA the best Night Time RF

I love the XA, infact when I think about itOlympus have made two of my all time favourite RF cameras the Xa and the 35RC......it must be the glass, great night time shots in this thread by the way, very inspiring

I've owned 2 of these in the past 2 years and neither of them have worked for more than a couple of months, tops. I really want to like this camera, as the images I've gotten with them have been excellent, and other seem to love it, but I keep ending up with bad copies, apparently.

XA's are delicate creatures. They just are. The ones you come across these days tend to have had some kind of "event" at some point in their lives. Especially the ones you find in thrift shops.

I had to repair most of mine, but they're working well now. I tend to be gentle.

FWIW, I have noticed that the age of film cameras in thrift stores is over. People happily dumped their old film cameras now that we're in the digital era, and closets have been emptied. It looks like the majority of closets have now been fully emptied and the "supply" of neat old film cameras has dwindled to almost nothing. That's sad news for folks like me who used to visit thrift shops in hopes of discovering a forgotten, discarded treasure...just because its film and its old.

The Xa's are very pleasant cameras to use and benefit from a little TLC now and then. A lot of specialists exist who can make them as new and at charity shop prices plus a repair they are still a bargain.

The metering is great at night, but like someone else said, what a bitch to focus in the dark.

XAs are great rangefinder cameras, but for as far as auto exposure can go. Auto exposure, especially from CDs meters, and night time simply do not match.

Night focusing can be very easy.

One can quickly get used to the XA as a zone focusing camera by memorizing the lever position to corresponding distances. You really only need to learn one or two positions. One side is minimum, the other is infinity and one or two in between for individual people and small groups.

If you want, you can file a little notch for your intermediate position then just feel for it.

I've made some really nice night exposures with the XA.
