I got a call from Hasselblad this morning in regards to getting the bulb setting upgraded and the IR sensor changed in my Hasselblad XPan-1 so I can shoot HIE. They said there are plenty of parts available and they could get it done in 7-10 days, will get the bulb setting to same timing as the XPan-II.

I am really excited about this proposition so when I asked the guy how much it might cost, he could only tell me that they would have to see the camera. I thought that was a bit strange but OK, I'll go with it.

has anyone had any experience with Hasselblad on any mods or even repairs to their XPan and what that might have costed?

Cheers,

Dan

If Hasselblad in NJ is doing the work, then you have no worries. They do top notch work.

And they never quote over the phone.

Hasn't HIE been discontinued by Kodak?

Yep, I found a source who had some of the very last run, expiration 02/2009. I bought 120 rolls. I also found some "David Romano" in 120, I got 20 rolls of it.

I can't get HIE to takeup in my xpan1.
I put film in, pull tongue out to mark, close back and nothing happens! Have evan tried doing with one roll in daylight to ensure that I wasn't doing anything wromg, butt still nothing.
Put in aroll of velvia or provia, works fine as normal .
I figure this is someting to do with the very thin base?
Anyone else have this problem or better yet a solution?

Kind of moot unless you've removed the IR sensor.

Not much point of removing/disabling the sensor if you can't get the film to load..................
Do you have a solution?

Touche.

I'd try varying the distance you pull the tail across. The thinner base may not catch as easily at any point along the way. Another option might be to trim the whole tail off, try loading with the full-width film. My Xpan is on loan, so I can't try either.

Yep, tried trimming leader to the full width trick too, all tough to do in a dark bag....................still no good.

Well, I insured the body only for $2,000 and sent it to Hasselblad for a CLA, max bulb time and infrared adjustment.

They told me 7-10 days so we will see. I figure I can go a month to 6 weeks then I need that sucker back...

I'll let you all know what the estimate is as soon as I get it.

They did not give a quote first?

Nope, but it looks like from other threads that a CLA will set you back about $165 so I am hoping the total bill does not go over $300.

I'll be sure and let you all know when I do get an estimate.

***Update***

I just got an email from them, not bad:

Convert XPan-1 for IR film use
Legthen bulb time to max ( 540 seconds?)
General CLA ( address stiff on / off selector )

$303.79 shipped, parts are in stock, done in 7 days..

After being in the shop for just a week, all the work on my XPan is done and it shipped out today..:).

I am really surprised at the great service I have got from Hasselblad USA thus far.

Just to re-cap, I had the following done to my XPan, version 1:

1. CLA, repair sticky on/off switch.

2. Convert to be able to use Infrared film.

3. Convert bulb time to maximum possible, 540 seconds I think.

I can't wait to get it back!

Could you pm me the cost of the above service? I have one xpan with the same problem as yours. Thanks
