Which do you prefer?

On my DSLRs, I prefer using AF-ON and disengaging the shutter button from focusing. I focus, hold it and recompose if needed.

I’m trying out both methods right now and gravitating to just using the shutter button, at least for now. I’ll have to see if that changes after I install the thumb grip that I ordered.

shutter button
- when i'm changing focus distance frequently in a fast-moving situation, especially when the light is fading and apertures get larger.

back button
- presetting focus for one kind of shot, especially in "good"/bright light.
- when i don't need to change focus that often, or when the action is more relaxed.

Oddly enough on the X-E/X-Pro/X100 series I have no issues just using the shutter button for focus but on the X-T2 or any SLR body style I prefer BBF

the issue with the stock X-T2 is that the back AF button is a little small, buy some sugru and use it to make the button slightly bigger

That was actually the primary reason why I was leaning toward the shutter button instead of my usual AF-ON. The button was just too small., Hadn’t heard of suguru, but after having read about it just now, seems like the way to go.

Thanks!

Interesting, because my preference is just the complete opposite. On my DSLR, I prefer the AF-ON when there is rapid movement, like birds in flight or dancers on a stage. I only used the shutter button for focus when the subject was still.

With the X-Pro 2 and X100T I prefer back button most of the time. I use focus and recompose with the OVF and MF-back button mode also lets me turn the fly-by-wire focus collar to set to fine tune focus with the ERF window. With the newest Fujinon lenses the focus collar is fast and smooth.
