YALT - Test of 8 50mm lenses

I should do a new test. I'll try to do the 'lux at f/2. I think you'll be surprised by the comparison between the Summilux and the Summicron both at f/2 and f/2.8 -- I wonder if I will.

The modern cron is always overlooked and passed over by those who prefer the Summicron DR. I've tested both side-to-side before on slide film, and I didn't like the oof rendition of the DR when close-focused, but I liked the DR better at longer distances. I stuck with the tabbed version, since it's much lighter and easier to use, and will mount on every single M-mount body.

Nobody ever comments on this, so maybe it's just me: I always find the Canon wide open to behave very similarly to the Nikkor 50/1.4 ....

Postprocessing affecting results?

Postprocessing affecting results?

I'm noticing obvious artifacts in the images posted; they look like a very heavy handed application of unsharp mask.

As I'm not familiar with the M8 (nor with any digital camera, for that matter), can you confirm that whatever in-camera sharpening was turned off, and that any postprocessing, if applied - which I'd prefer not -, was uniformly applied to every shot?

I wouldn´t rule out an overcompressed jpg, tough.

The subject was nice for illustrating bokeh and contrast (and the advantages of uncoated lenses in harsh light). If you do the test again, can you include a subject in flat light, with a lot of fine detail?

I think You prove that the shot is beautiful with any lens. What an eye you have...

Great test. For me, I really liked the contrast and rendition of the summilux, the tabbed cron was next, and then probably the J8. But I think each of those brings something to the table with its own character.

It probably was the image size reduction, and JPEG recompression at work. Thanks for the comments.

Thanks, Roland. Well, the M8 was *just* sent to Solms last week, after sitting in NJ for three weeks (yes! THREE weeks! I'm so p****-off)

I'll try to shoot more with the CZJ 85mm Sonnar 🙂
