Yet Another Rangefinder Newbie needs help,

I'm searching for a second camera next to my SLR. And as I want to do some streetshooting a SLR is not the best choice, so I decided I'll give RF's a try.

So what I'm searching for, is basically a RF for low light and streetphotography. What do I expect:

not too large (most of the time it should be very close to me)
metering would be great (but not necessary)
if meter included than iso should got up to 800 or more
film advance lever would be fine
manual exposure settings
if it uses a fixed lense than it should have f2.0 or better
quiet shutter

ok so that wouldn't be a real problem, but it should fit into a student's budget 🙄 so max. 150 $ (if it's absolutely superb maybe 200).
I did a lot of browsing and my fav at the moment ist the Yashica Lynx 14

Hey Archie! Welcome to the world of rangefinders! Lots of fun and different than SLRs for sure. With your needs I would suggest checking out the Voigtlander Bessa R. Yeah, the shutter isn't the quietest available, but it has just about everything else. But with a student's budget there might have to be some kind of consession!
 
thanks popstar, I already looked into the bessa R and it's also on my list but due to the sound and "high" price it's not on top. I just found the oly 35rd and minolta 7sII which look quite nice too

easy, yashica gsn, I love this camera, the manual settings on it might not be manual enough for you but I like it, its a apature priority shooter. Also very cheap. I use this for street shooting and loved it so much I bought two. The 45mm 1.7 lens is one of the sharpest lenses ive ever used. The iso dial goes to 1000 which is kinda a downer for me because the lens is lower contrast then todays modern ultra contrasty lenses which means pushing film in it should be a lot less painfull.

ps. the first one I got was 33 bucks, the second 16, plus 2 yashicaman battery adapter things with batteries, 24 bucks. All together a great set that I highly recomend.
 
Welcome! but be warned, this forum is highly adictived...😀 Like you I'm pretty new to RF's,switching over from SLRs, Nooo... comparison in my book! I bought a Canonet QL17G111 at a camera store here in NC and I love it . The quick load feature is nice,and the 40mm1/1:7 lens is superb I think ! Battery only works the meter so it,s not bat dependant. It's a little on the heavy side but it has a really nice feel to it . The shutter is the hardest thing for me to get used to, it's so quiet after hearing the shutter on my AE1p. When I snap the shutter I sometimes wonder if it went off. The only two gripes I here about it are the shutter speed,500 and the meter only works on A. There is a camera store in Raleigh, where I got mine, had 2 of these last week & they looked nice for $75. But no matter what RF you get ,like me you,ll be hooked. I'm sure the Yashica is a great camera too and if thats what you really wan't then I say get it, but I'm just commiting on the one that I know anything about & i'm no expert just having fun. Bought a Bessa L last month now looking like i'm going to soon be the the proud owner of aFED2. Some body pleeeese help me 🙂 Well just don't forget, I warned ya!!
 
Damnit. I thought you were actually talking about knitting, and you wanted to know how to get your yarn back up to snuff!

Cheap tactic, getting us knitters interested.
 
Most major manufacturers have made models with fixed lenses, 45mm FL and speed greater than f/2, and leaf shutters. Any one of them should do, since "brand loyalty" is not an object. It's always good, though, to get something with which one can grow if one wishes to do that. The Bessa R with a fast 35mm may be the best to start with.

haha I wasn't aware of that, I'm from Austria so I just put together a few letters that sounded good 😀
