Yashica 24 Owners - 120 Film

Hi Sid,

Thanks for the new number and details.

Good luck with the shutter. I have a nice EM with the same problem. Haven't had a chance to tackle it yet.

120 Film Can be Used in the Unmodified Yashica 24

120 Film Can be Used in the Unmodified Yashica 24

Correspondent Alan Williams has provided a scan of Supplementary Instructions for using 120 film with the Yashica 24. This was with the user manual for his father's camera:

It seems that at some point Yashica agreed that 120 film can be used in an unmodified camera vindicating those that have said that it was never a problem. This sort of makes the purpose of the special back a bit of a mystery or is it more like; yes 120 can be used but if you are only going to use 120, the special back is the optimal solution? I have amended my website accordingly. Anyone interested in the photo and assembly diagram of the back can see them here: http://www.yashicatlr.com/66Models.html#yashica24

More importantly, on the reverse of Alan Williams' scan is this warning for all crank wind Yashicas:

I like this thread. Wonderfully anorakish!

And I like this daft (ie. incorrect) notion that 120 film doesn't work in the Yashica 24, because it means that the 24 can still be bought for bargain prices. IMO the 24 is the nicest of all the Yashica TLRs, along with the 124 and the 12 which are virtually identical. In fact I've bought 4 of them!

I have a Yashica 12. It is a heavy-metal beast of a camera (and I mean that in a good way). Everything works but the shutter, I am guessing that the previous owner did not have the flash sync set properly when he tried the self timer (timer lever is stuck in "on" position). I really should get it repaired.

I started the thread so I guess you mean me. I'm not an erudite Englishman so I had to look up the meaning of "anorakish". This sums up most of the definitions pretty well, "a socially inept person with a hobby considered by most people to be boring". That probably fits, who am I to judge? "Daft", I already know from my wife.

The thread had reached the conclusion that despite what Yashica initially said, you can shoot 120 in an unmodified 24. It is also a fact that Yashica had offered an accessory 120 back in the same way that they incorporated 120/220 switching into the 124 and 124G and that is why they probably put the 120 start mark in from the beginning.

So what is your point exactly? Running a Yashica website is boring but owning four Yashica 24s/12s/124s is excitingly different and socially acceptable?

Oh dear! Paul, I'm sorry if you interpreted my post as criticism because none was intended. Your website is excellent and I've enjoyed reading it.

My post was written in jest of course, and was intended to poke gentle fun at all of the posts on this website. We're all anoraks to a greater or lesser extent, otherwise we wouldn't be here. A long debate about whether or not a 50 year old camera accepts a certain type of film which largely died out years ago certainly proves my point!

There's no harm in being anorakish of course, but it's probably something best not admitted to friends and colleagues. I'm probably worse than most on here, with four Yashica 24 models among my collection of 20+ Yashicas and at least 100 TLRs. I see it as a harmless hobby but my wife sees it as some form of illness. I try not to mention it to any but my closest friends!

I had not seen this thread before at all -- for what it's worth mine has both stickers. Nice camera!

So, does "anorakish" in Brit-speak mean "nerdy"? If so, I agree, and I like the thread too! (But what's wrong with an anorak?)

mkvrnn - OK, I got a bit over-sensitive and probably need to get out more. Well not probably, but not today, it will be 40 degrees C. And yes, the 24 is nice.

KoNickon - Thanks for the info. I'm now pretty certain all 24s were intended to have those marks and the few without have lost them over the years. Its just odd that there was nothing at all in user manuals, except for the loose supplementary instructions that seem to have come a bit later.

Don't worry I am sure no one is upset and a big thank you Paul for your site, for someone like me with a Grey A, Yashica-mat, Mat EM, and a 124G it is so very handy to have and so full of interesting info.

I agree -- I spent a fair amount of time at your very well researched site today, and am only sorry I hadn't come across it before. I was on my own anorakish research assignment: Whether my D with serial number beginning D 5030 should properly be fitted with one of the folding metal caps (apparently not; the plastic cap it came to me with seems correct). Now I need a Yashica TLR to fit that folding metal cap I picked up from a parts box....

This is wonderful news, KoNickon. There's potential for a whole new thread here! Shall we restrict it to Yashicas lens caps or even Yashica D caps, or should we invite broader participation by opening it up to the whole TLR community? I'll leave it up to you.

I don't like to boast, but I know a thing or two about Rollei lens caps. Bays I, II and III, and plastic, chrome or my favourite, satin chrome. And what about Chinese copies?

But as far as Yashica D caps go, I'm in the dark. My one and only D is pristine but came without one! I'm willing to sort through the rest of my Yashicas if that helps, but without looking I can only recall those nasty plastic things.

Now Mamiya C33 lenscaps are another matter entirely.........

Over to you Nick.

My Yashica 24 that I picked up for $8 because the shutter was stuck has SN#L7020353 and has the 120 mark inside. When I pulled the shutter/lens out, on it was written 67. Not sure if it signifies the year or not.

Shutter works now and I am taking my first TLR shots.

Hope it helps your project.

Thanks guys. It looks like most of the 24s have the 120 start marks. The two earliest examples have them and only two in the middle of the serial number range have been found without them - I would say that all were intended to have the marks.

Shutter release cable

Shutter release cable

I am a total newbie to Yashica a TLRs in general. I would like to get a release cable for my 24. I think I would have to look on the ebay for one, but I am not sure what will work.
Can anyone clarify what to look for? Pictures would be great, or a link to one. Looking forward to doing some low light shots with it.

For the 24 you will need what is called a Leica nipple type release cable , the Yashica-mat 12, 124, 124G have a standard release cable. but previous to these models most Yashica TLR cameras used the Leica nipple, I think these were also fitted to Nikon cameras as well.
To fit the Leica type the plated outer ring is removed from the shutter button which will leave a threaded part over which to attach the cable. On the 12, 124 and 124G there is a hole in the centre of the release button that takes a standard cable. Hope this helps.

I have a Nikon release that I think was made for the Nikon F (and possibly the F2), and it works on this kind of shutter button.

At the base of your shutter button you unscrew the ring that covers the threads. The remote release has a short tube with a plunger inside of it and it screws onto those threads. Beyond the tube and internal plunger, it resembles a standard cable release.

There must be other manufacturers who offered such cable releases, as this kind of shutter button used to be fairly common. My old Ricohflex has it, too.
