Hello, Just was given a yashica Gsn, seems to be in perfect condition. But after shooting the first film, now I get the yellow arrow for every aperture setting.. A battery problem? Or have the electrics just gone suddenly? The POD thing? All advice would be gratefully grasped! Thank you.

Could be a case of dirty electrical contacts or possibly the POD, as you said. Only way to know for sure would be to dig into it...

sounds like you had dirty contact AND the POD problem... you've solved one, but not the other. When you advance the film do you hear a loud "thunk"... this actually indicates you DON'T have a POD problem 🙂 If it's completely quiet when you advance the film it means the POD fallen off and needs a replacement. If you are hearing the click and you're getting a red light all the time at the START of depressing the advance, you still might have dirty contacts. Try exercising the camera.

- rotate the ring on the barrel back and forth, not to hard, just back and forth, back and forth for a while

- slowly depress the shutter (you should hear the meter engage with a staticky sound) and push it up and down without pushing it all the way down so that the shutter trips.

My GTN needs to be exercised like this for a while if it's been sitting a while. Eventually the red light only comes on when it should 🙂

just tried... yes, i do hear a thunk winding the film on.. and a staticky sound..

If it works, fine. Just want to note - you can not be sure about POD judging by sound only. Probably Yashica technicians can, though for most of users not dedicated to G-series exclusively, sound can not reveal true state of POD. That said, I had GSN with proper "thunk" and messy POD.

yes, have been following the exercise remedy and the lights are flashing but slightly at random, as if the meter is completely gone insane.. left it a bit and then we're back to the consistent yellow light in all conditions.
so you might be right here, thunk and messy pod..

i think it must be a POD problem, there's still no logical relationship between the lights flashing and the actual light situation the cameras looking at. shame, present from my other half off ebay.. worth getting it repaired does anyone think? thank you again..

My G35 also lighted yellow only, on arrival. Worth? Have no idea because it depends on how badly you want to use it.

Major Yashica repairmen do the best and charge about 100, I think. Probably ask around and maybe some people here on RFF do POD swaps. I could help you though shipping to me in EU and back to you would cost you already some us$80, so local US work is preferable in your case.

I think Russ from camerarefurb.com would be good candidate, don't know if he still does job. Probably he made you offer, not very explicit though ask him 🙂

My personal opinion is that the camera is worth fixing. I love mine. Send it to Mark Hama (http://markhama.home.comcast.net/~markhama/). It's usually around $85 for a complete overhaul, and I don't see why sending it back and forth across the pond should be a problem.

Yashica GSN is one of those cameras that just about everyone who's been working for the camera service branch for more than 5-10 years are able to get it right. It's a great camera and repairing it really doesn't demand expensive black art and blue smoke like Leica repair jobs.
