Yashica GSN - Does B mode need battery to work?

Hi,
I've just bought a Yashica GSN as my first start into rangefinder area. I have some problem when test this camera when met up with the seller. When I turn to B mode, press the shutter button, but the shutter did not keep open until I release the button. I haven't found the approriate solution for the battery yet, so I still have a doubt that the B mode only work when have battery, isn't it?

The camera requires a battery for B or any other mode to work..

Actually, the shutter will fire at 1/500 sec, at all settings, w/o a battery.

A cheap battery replacement would be an alkaline PX 28 (6 V) battery wrapped with carton or plastic tubing plus a short spring to ensure contact with the camera contacts.
A better replacement is made the same way, but using silver oxide batteries, which may last a little longer.

You are correct but....I have found on many Electros the shutter will not open completely with no battery installed but will work fine with battery.
Open the aperture to f/1.7 and while holding the lens pointed at a bright light fire the shutter and see if the blades open completely while looking through the back..
I suspect it is because of the shutter actuating arm that makes and breaks the circuit on the electromagnet not moving to its full opening position without power on it.

Actually the arm should move freely without a battery. If it is hanging, it probably needs cleaned and a tiny drop of oil on the pivot shaft.

I just overhauled my Electro 35 Professional and all is working as it should but I had one awhile back that the blades would not open completely with the battery removed but worked fine with it installed. Pics taken with it were properly exposed etc. I didn't take it apart though for cleaning.

Thank so much for all of your replies. After plug the battery inside, my Yashica works really well.
