Yashica Mat slipping problem?

Happy new year everyone!

I got this Yashica Mat for £20, the seller sold it for spare parts as the shutter appeared jammed.

When it arrived, it seems that the shutter works fine. But reading the manual got me suspecting that there is something wrong with the advance mechanism. It seems to advance and advance without stopping to the next frame. Is that how it should be? I am under the impression that it should stop on the next frame.

What do you think is going wrong with it?

I haven't had one in quite a long time, but that doesn't sound right. I do have some notes on how to get into the camera and have a look, I'll be happy to send a copy if you'll email me at rick.oleson@gmail.com. The notes are based on the 124G but I think they will be similar enough.

With no film that's correct. With a film it's not. If you have a film in it, does the frame counter advance?

With or without film in it, to advance to the first frame after you've opened the door and reset the counter, the film wind crank is advanced around 2 revolutions and then pulled back a very short distance until you hear the click; thereafter the wind advance is very short, maybe 1/4 revolution.

OK. More explanation required otherwise the above will have people thinking their Mats are screwed when they're not.

The frame counter is driven off a wheel that gets pressed up against the take-up spool. If there's no take-up spool, (no film) the frame counter won't advance and you can crank the handle as long as you want and nothing will happen. However, if you have an empty take-up spool in position, even with no film loaded, the frame counter 'might' advance dependent on whether the wheel that presses against it gets sufficient grip. Even if it does, it probably won't be consistent.

On my Mat, it takes about four or five turns to get to the first frame and between about a half a turn and a full turn to advance between frames. It will vary depending on how much film is on the take-up spool.
