first as i'm new to this board : hi all =)

i'm looking for people with this kind of hood on their electro :

does it fit the camera well enough for the rangefinder to operate ?
and because i missed this auction, is anyone here selling that shade ?

First, welcome to the forums. Do you mean like this? Sorry, not for sale. To answer your question, as far as I know, they work with anything in the 50mm range. If you are looking for something in the 45mm range, they should be fine, but frankly, I haven't tried. I don't own a Yashica rangefinder and use this on a 50mm SLR lens on occasion. Good luck in your search. As an aside, with good coating, your Yashica rf lens shouldn't suffer from too much flare unless pointed directly into the sun, or probably worse, at an almost 90 degree angle with sunlight across the lens.

To be on the save side I did cut out a piece - visible a the end of the red arrow.

BTW mine is a Minolta.

Oops. I think I misread what you were looking for. But that is the great thing about this forum. Somebody has been there and done that and has the correct answer.
 
you were not wrong Oftheherd, and my english is not as good as expected =)
that's the shade but yours is Ø 54, the one i'm looking for is Ø 57
i must admit the sun is not a big problem (i live in french brittany)
the vintage look of this square hood is lovely but seeing jacema's pic it seems to me a little big on an electro, maybe the yashica's a bit smaller ..
well if i manage to get one i'll share the result ;)

My mistake from not knowing more of the Electros. I had thought they were also 52mm filter threads and if so could use the 54mm slip on hood like I have. But in fact, I got that with a Yashica TL Electro X of the 'bay. I guess I should have known.
 
USH, I've got a couple of Yashica GSN's and the hood is an issue. They are big and interfere with the rangefinder view for composition. The rectangular looks cool, I agree, however for functionality I use the round one.

The GSN doesn't have flare issues like the Lynx 14 so you have time to find something. When you have done some shots don't forget to post in Jon Flanders thread here "show us a shot from your Yashica"

I gave up on finding a decent hood for any of my rangefinders. I just use a piece of gaffer's tape, folded along its long edge, and stuck around the end of the barrel. 15-20mm is enough to make a difference. Some wire or plastic would stiffen it, but so far I've had no vignetting issues.

That hood looks great on a black Electro. Seeing as I have a GT and two black MG-1's on the way, I need to try and find that hood as well. Any more thoughts on it's functionality, from David perhaps?

Hi all,
Is anyone watching this thread anymore? As the owner of the aforementioned hood, I have to admit I never use it. First of all, I rarely have a flare problem with my GTNs or GSNs. Second, it's really big. I'm not talking about the viewfinder obstruction, but the dimensions themselves. It makes the camera significantly bigger as you can see from the photos.
The viewfinder obstruction isn't a big deal at all. Yeah, it's in the way, but I rarely compose without moving around a bit anyway, so I know what's over there. I use the vented 40mm hood on my CV Nokton 40mm, and it obstructs the CLE viewfinder, but I can't say that I've ever noticed it since I tried it out at Photo Village before I bought it. And beyond that, it's never been a problem. I've never developed my film and said "SH*T! Look what was in the lower-right corner without me knowing it!"

G`day ush, from what I can see from David`s photos, the square hood intrudes into the viewfinder about as much as the round one. I`ve found that the round rubber hoods do a good job of cutting down flare and are cheap, $5.00AUD each at a recent camera fair!!

I got couple of Hama square, plastic hoods in 49 and 55 mm in hopes of duplicating the look of the vintage dedicated hoods. What a bright idea I had!!!! However, NO deal--they are too big and protrude more into VF than the generic round ones. I had to buy mail order since that kind of stuff is non-existant here in Korea.

Actually, I think Hama makes them for Digicams. Anybody wanna buy them?
