Yes, fascinating. I've stepped in it on DPR -- I saw a comment that was labelled 'Phil Askey' and without reasoning it through, mentioned it there. Boy did I stir the wrong stick.
Anyway, I'm concerned about my M8 order, but I want to see what happens in the next several weeks. If Leica has a path to give us non-magenta IR / blacks and to reduce the banding (even my 5D has some of that) I would be happy with it. Sounds like a hardware update to me, and none-too-cheap for Leica to perform.
I have a silver M8 on order at Adorama, and I've left a message to see if they can cancel the pre-order, but I might just hang on another week or two. I doubt very much my order is at the top of the list as I made the order only a few weeks ago.
For Leicas, I would stay with my M6 and film but I absolutely have become lazy and will not bother to develop the 10 rolls of Ilford HP5 sitting around. It seemed to me that I had a better time developing film when I was doing medium format--much bigger negative, easier to scan, simpler to develop, etc., etc., etc... I have an R-D1 and love it, as it gets taken with me 80% of the time. I'd love the M8 to usurp it as long as it can be a reliable companion...
Oh well, it's late and I must sleep.
