Yet another newbie question.

I'm headed for India in a few weeks, and have now assembled 3/4 of my lens collection: 35/1.2, 50/1.4, and 15/4.5.

So now I'm ready to think about backup for the digital images. Reading reviews of Space, Hyperspace, and the Epson P-series models is confusing.

Any preferences here for quick backup for SD cards?

I'd prefer to be able to do backups before each card is full, as I'll be going places where theft is a real possibility.

Another question: Can any backup device "see" pure .erf files?

Thanks once more (this site is a gold mine),

Oh, on a completely different note, I had the pleasure today of meeting New Yorker writer Francine du Plessix Gray, whose stepfather Alex Liberman was art director at Condé Nast and a good photographer ("The Artist in his Studio" is terrific).

I use an Epson P-3000 for backup while travelling. It recognizes and displays .erf files, but will *not* let you zoom in on the raw file. I happen to shoot RAW+JPG, so I have the JPG to zoom in on if I so desire.

You can backup the whole card at once with one command. However, I don't think you can do incremental backups, i.e. copying just the new files that you've added since the last backup... I believe it just copies the whole card again into a new folder. But it'd be a simple matter to just delete the old folder(s) with partial backups once you backup a card that's full.

On my last trip I backed up to the P-3000, and then backed that up to CF cards that I didn't need for shooting (since I didn't bring the DSLR)... plenty of copies for safety.

As a bonus, I also loaded the P3000 with videos and music for my daughter for the plane ride... it will play video for 4-5 hours, which was handy. I brought an extra battery but didn't need it.

So because of the P3000 I was able to leave my laptop, the portable DVD player and my iPod at home for that trip.

Jonas, thank you,

Jonas, thank you,

you answered all my questions, and added something I didn't even think of: my 9 year old daughter will be going with me, and preloaded movies could really ease the 17 hour plane ride.

I wouldn't need to zoom--I just thought that if I could show the files it might make the Epson a more reasonable idea than the Space. I'd like to be able to do little slide shows, and show people their pictures. Any idea if the star ratings in the Epson get transferred to Lightroom?

Hunt photo in Boston is having demo-days soon, so I could take a card and try out the P-3000, which they stock.

Epson has refurbs for $375, plus a $50 mail in rebate so it's $325.

I don't think the Epson ratings get transferred to Lightroom. At least, I just tried it and it didn't. Perhaps there's a way though.

As for video: I think it was kinda picky about the format, and it took me a while to get the right settings. If you have problems, drop me a line and I'll see what settings I used.
