Sony develops CMOS sensor for phones

Sony has announced the development of the finest-yet pixel-pitch 1/2.5" sensor. The 12.2MP CMOS sensor has been developed for mobile phone cameras, but is of a size commonly used in compact and super zoom cameras. The IMX060PQ sensor, which Sony brands 'Exmor' in common with its DSLR CMOS sensors, will also be available incorporated into an F2.8 28mm-equiv lens unit with piezoelectric driven autofocus - relatively advanced for a camera phone module.

At long last... 94% of the camera buying public

will have a digital camera they can use without taking 8 hours of instruction in a digital photography class.... maybe?

The bins for recycled cell phones are going to be recycled to gather up all the recycled point and shoot digital cameras currently out there in the market... maybe even more than a few entry level DSLR's.

i sold one DSLR, I think I have to sell the other one as well before the **** hits the fan and digital market takes a nose dive like PC memory market.

What's the difference if a camera is in a phone or if it's in a piece of metal marked "Leica"?

If it's a decent lens and a good sensor, it will take better pictures than almost any film camera from the last few decades.

Does it have to "look" like a camera with a name brand on it?

EVERYTHING is going to have a computer and a camera in it pretty soon.

I'm guessing the average camera/phone buyer is far less concerned about their choice of camera/phone than you or the vast majority of RFF members... I doubt there will be statistically significant drop in digital camera sales ... the industry has been talking about handheld technology convergence for years and it still hasn't happened...

If I didn't know better, I would say that Sony is actually bragging about having such small pixels! :bang:

A vision of a future Cell Phone Camera Forum (CPCF) post just flashed in front of me:

"The combination of the CMOS sensor and lens produce an image that is too plasticky and sharp for my important photos. I prefer the way old digital sensors and lenses draw a noisy image. The build quality on the cellphone cameras is crap, while my with my old digital camera, I could drop it from about a half a foot, at the right angle, and no problems. Those old digital cameras were built like a tank, real petroleum-based plastic Japanese-robot-built construction stuff. I really prefer auto-focus and it's occasional misses, than todays everything-in-focus (EIF) and sharp. I see old digital cameras used in all the art/photography departments these days. Using them brings be back to the fundamentals, before the breakthroughs of Adobe CreativeSuite20."

I'm not into sensor battle, though a lot of cheap digital cameras, webcams and similar state they are using CMOS sensor. But I don't claim myself expert on this. I think, CMOS used in Kwanon cameras aren't same CMOS used in webcams.
