Here's a picture of Barack Obama campaigning in West Palm Beach, Florida yesterday. Except you can't even get a great look at the prez because of all the amateur idiots taking idiot pictures with their idiot tablets, getting in the way of the real professional photographers. This disruptive behavior has to stop.

So effin' what? They have just as much right to take a picture as 'real professional photographers', who, by the way, are usually the ones obscuring the view.

retaliate.
you take pictures with two fully deployed umbrellas on your sides for better lighting.
You're the only one to get the shot.
Voila...:)

Seriously: I really understand why waving a device with so much real estate is annoying, and not very courteous to the rest of the world. And when your income work is messed up as a result, I can see how this is beyond annoying.

It's definitely silly, considering even cheap compact digitals take better pictures. I definitely wouldn't use an iPad for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to take a pic like that. But I understand why non-photographers might do it.

As a journalist who carries a camera (I'm not a true press photographer), it doesn't really bother me. There are press moments for a reason :) I'll just let the kids have their fun, so to speak, because I know I can get my shot when I need it.

What *does* occasionally bother me is people who interfere with our camera work because they run around with those little pocket video cameras, taping everything for their blog or YouTube channel. They can get quite irritating during actual emergencies or open-to-the-public events. Get in, take a shot, get out. Or learn the etiquette of the professionals.

If your pictures aren't good enough, it is because you are not close enough.

I like the composition on the ipad better than the tele-pro shot.

Welcome to wedding photography 101.

This is nothing new - just the prevalence of these items has now broadened to the point where everyone has one and wants to use it as their "camera".

Cheers,
Dave

Beats me why anyone feels the need to carry one of those dorky things around, there's more to life than constantly updating your twatter profile or what have you.

Well, that's life as a photog. The instances where a pic of mine has been fouled by someone--or their iPhone, iPad, etc--are myriad. You just have to deal with it.

Actually , I think it's kind of a cool shot. Pic of a pic, which has a kind of cool composition.

This might do professionals good. If idiots with Ipads mean only 10 amateurs can get the shot instead of 400 amateurs with P&S's BUT the Pro still manages to find workarounds and get some decent pics than there might, once again be a market for pro work. If anything pros should be handing out bigger tablets so that only 1 idiot and 1 pro gets the shot!

The pro is focussed on the ipad, not Obama - perhaps making the best of a bad situation?

Or maybe it's the autofocus. ;-)

I suppose if holding up ipads in a crowd has become socially acceptable, then no-one can complain if someone holds up an 8x10 camera in a crowd as they have the same 'blocking real estate'.

But seriously, it is just the sign of the times. These images of BO with ipad will help differentiate the 2008 campaign from the 2012 campaign. In 2016 there will be other gadgets, other fads. You can get a little annoyed about it. You can laugh at it. Enjoy it while it lasts.

I remember watching one of the opening ceremonies for the olympics back in the 90's on tv and noticing all the flashes going off around the stadium. All those automatic cameras were flashing for nothing (at least not helping the pictures they were trying to take), but they added this great sparkle-pixie dust affect on tv. So were these people just wasting film, or were they contributing to the moment?

There are already cameras you wear with eyeglass frames, so maybe there will soon be no need to wave your ipad like an imbecile.

Think of it - All you will need to capture the Decisive Moment is to walk around all day with the eyeglass camera running. Provided of course you have time to sort through 30,000 images at the end of the day.

It's kind of like shooting the Mermaid Parade late in the day when there are mobs of people and too many photographers jumping in front of your shots. LOL.

This gets my vote as the best campaign photo I have seen so far this season. It is not the 1,000,001st version of the same old photo we see over and over.

Maybe those guys are the "real" photographers linked to the office and immediately sending those shots over the internet.

Also . . . why is this any different than 10,000 "real" photographers elbowing everyone else aside or shoving that 600mm tele over their shoulders ?

Buy an ipad or whatever they are and join the mob !

:D
