Your fave version Summilux 50mm and why?

It's a toss-up for me between the ASPH version and the last pre-ASPH Summilux-M.

The pre-ASPH has slightly less overall contrast which I find generally more pleasant, but it suffers from poor contrast and resolution wide open and in the closest focusing ranges.

The ASPH addresses both those concerns with aplomb and draws consistently across the entire focusing range at all apertures. It is one of the great all-rounders in photography.

Within its limitations, I just like the way the pre-ASPH draws a little better.

We are indeed fortunate to have such choices.

latest pre-asph. The ASPH is brilliant in it's own right and is technically near-perfect, but I just prefer a little inperfection in my stuff.

The pre-asph version, without a doubt. It's not too sharp wide open, but sharp enough; great bokeh. Heck of a lot cheaper used than an ASPH used.

hey guys, thanks for the replies. But lets not just put which ver you prefer but also the reason so that this thread can be helpful to the rest to understand all lux better.

I just purchased the 50 ASPH version to see in what ways it is different from my former 50 Lux pre-asph. The pre-asph did good by me but I traded it off in favor of a 35mm Lux ASPH.

i have a v.2 (1962 E43) and love it to death. it is one of the sharpest in the center, with a beautiful fall off that naturally frames photos. i also think it's my glowiest lens, even stopped down. it is so distinctive, i can recognise when my friend (who's borrowed it) post pictures on flickr taken with it.

i sometimes regret not getting the E46 to have the ability to get closer, but the draw from nine keeps me from ever thinking of letting this one go... the lower contrast wide open allows me to catch subtleties in both the shadows and highlights on digital (R-D1) that i doubt i would have gotten with the ASPH.

although the focal length is too long for every day with the 1.5 crop, i think this has to be my favourite lens of all!

To me the 50 ASPH stands out for it's great design, optically and mechanically. It's the way the lens produces the image, but equally important the close focus range of 0.7m, low-light ability, accuracy of focus and built-in lens-shade. A golden mix for me. Did I mention I'm very happy with it? 😀

I am a 50mm freak and without question the 50mm ASPH is the greatest. When I shell out dough for a fast lens I want it to perform at max aperture. I don't want a lens to be a "portrait lens" at max aperture and only gets good stopped down. This 50mm ASPH is already great at max aperture.

I think f1.4 is a difference too. In the cropped picture below taken wide-open with my v2 pre-ASPH, you can see the odd effects in the OOF areas. I've seen this before from other early pre-ASPH lenses. The ASPH draw would be much smoother.

The 50 ASPH gets my vote. My rationale has already been well-stated by Photon42 above. I previously owned whatever version was being sold in 1970; I find the current one far superior...

I do. It takes an E43 UV with a 0.5mm thread pitch. B+W make an MRC filter that fits the lens perfectly. Hoya makes an 0.75mm pitch filter which oddly enough also fits the lens. The Hoya filter is good but the MRC B+W is outstanding. If you are planning on keeping the lens get the B+W. B&H in NYC have them in stock.
