Your Favorite Camera Sensor?

Canon 5d is the best ever digital sensor for me. For color.
Panasonic Lumix tiny PS with CCD for great good light colors and the best bw I ever seen on digital.
M9 sensor for best clarity of details.

All imported by LR. Most of the time if exposure correct here is nothing to do. Just export and print.
This is what good sensor does. It is next to Polaroid process.

Yes, I had forgotten about the original 5D. I loved those images; quite a unique look, especially for a CMOS.

For me, the sensor in the Nikon Df was really nice. It stood out compared to Fuji, Sony, and Leica stuff that I've used. That said, all of them work fine for me.

Yes, I agree completely. The Df is excellent.

Love the S5 Pro...love the Df...and very fond of the D5000 and D90. Less than 16mp... 🙂

I don't feel like I have a favorite but there are a few digital cameras I have used that I felt had a real "look" of their own.

Canon 5Dclassic.
It just gave a sort of Grocery store c-41 kind of look.

The M8 produced a lot of great files for me. Especially with the Biogon C 35mm and CLE 40mm.

The Fuji XA1 which had a 16mp bayer sensor instead of fuji X trans.
The fuji xf f1.4/35mm is fantastic on that sensor. Fuji does bayer so well (S5 pro anyone).
I wish they would produce a Bayer XE3 for all those nice X-mount lenses.

I only know what I have and use. The old Pentax *ist Ds makes lovely files with rich real colors, but only at base ISO (that limitation is kind of film like 😉.

The Nikon Df continues to astonish me, even in very low light and up to 6400 ISO images are vibrant and colors real.

The Leica M8 made so many keepers for me too, especially b/w but also color with Leica vintage lenses or biogons, as long as no one wore black... I just never bothered getting IR filterd for all of my lens sizes...

I've been a D700 shooter for a long time because I loved the camera's handling, but the sensor wasn't great. I wrestled a lot with files in post.
I got a good deal on a D3S a few months ago, and it's night and day. Its a very subtle difference but the colors are richer. Still blows the reds out, but the blues and greens are some how, deeper? My favorite sensor to date, both in terms of IQ, and the fact that it produces very usable work above 6400 ISO. Old tech, i know, but it's what I'm shooting.

I also loved the sensor (and the jpg engine) on the original Fuji X100.
Hated everything else about that camera, however.

I have a soft spot for my old D70S sensor. 6mp, but very little AA filtering. the OOC raws were beautiful.
Similarly, my D200 had a great film-like quality to it at base ISO, but the AA filtration was wayyy too heavy, the sensor ate batteries, and it was worthless above 800 ISO

Always liked the sensor in the 5Diii, but cant get behind the way the Canons handle, personally.

Ricoh GXR 12MP CMOS sensors do my favorite B&W.

Nikon D200 CCD is also pretty great, but not a big SLR fan.

For color, I enjoyed the Canon 5D Mark III.

Definitely the foveon sensor in the Merrills ... nothing else comes close for me.

I'm very happy with the look of my Leica M9. I had an NEX-5n for a short time and hated the output. Ditto for the original Fujifilm X100 - I know that a lot of people love the CMOS sensor in that camera, but in my hands, skin tones never quite looked right. (By the way, I only shoot RAW, so I don't think this was a JPG things.)

I seem to remember reading that they were a popular choice with wedding shooters for their very good skin tones. I'd also be interested in seeing examples.

I've used two Nikon's (D70 and D200), two Canons (my 5DmkII and Ariana's 400D), and the Kodak DCS 14n.

The Kodak had the most incredible color and skin tones. This was an early fullframe camera, 14mp, based on the Nikon N80 film camera body. It ate batteries, was unusable at anything above the base ISO of 80, and even at ISO-80 it sucked for exposures longer than 1 second due to noise, banding, and other nasty artifacts. In good light, however, the color was gorgeous the images were noiseless and the sharpness was phenomenal (the camera had no AA filter). Due to the serious limitations it imposed, I eventually sold it. I miss it sometimes.

Today, I am happy with the Canon 5DmkII and the results I have seen from the old 10mp crop sensor in the 400D are good too. I never liked the color from the Nikons, especially the skin tones.
