Many of us on RFF use quotations as part of a message signature.
I ran across this quote a few years ago and it has stuck in my mind. I think the essence of Shaw's words strike me as so simply, and perfectly authentic and noble.

"This is the true joy of life, the being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one; the being thoroughly worn out before you are thrown on the scrap heap; the being a force of Nature instead of a feverish selfish clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy."
Man and Superman [1903].
Epistle Dedicatory
George Bernard Shaw

I would like to know what quotes you other RFFers like. Let's hear (read) them.

"A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds" -Ralph Waldo Emerson

This is my favorite photography related quote. Whenever I read about a photographer who only uses one focal length lens, or won't shoot flash with his Leica, or never shoots color, or won't consider digital, or all the other hair shirts people wear and I'm tempted to do the same I always remember this quote and realize that there's nothing inherently virtuous in consistency.

EDIT: Of course, I relate it to photography not R. W. E.

Nick, Andy et al,

Those are all great. Sometimes the best quotations are simple, pithy statements we can all be left to interpret as we desire.

I like this one, it's as actual today as it was then.
