I voted for the collapsible, and for the best reason: that is the version I expect to get in about two weeks' time, and I shall never have another.

I have two. 1980s era black version ?? (sorry not sure exactly which without checking) and late 1950s era DR. They each have their charms. The former is contrasty as all get out. The latter is less so but has a lovely signature. I think I prefer the DR.

I have one from 1970, was a good deal. Which version is it? Can i be happy with it? Its on its way now, haven't used it yet.

Looks like v3, Max (or "rigid II"). Good lens. Not using the non-standard version numbers in this thread. Commonly,
the dual range and rigid I are called v2 (same optics).

I never had the privilege of owning the other Leitz 50s, but I won't easily part with my tabbed (Ver.5 ) Summicron. I could use a better hood then the plastic one that came with mine though...

Does anyone have some b+w shots with the Version 6 Summicron: Black with "50" & built-in hood - neither flickr, nor the RFF gallery is very specific about lens versions.

thanks

Peterm1,
Has there ever been a time when you needed a hood for your DR ? I just got
my first M3 w/50 DR:D and I wanted to know what you thought.

When I posted to this thread a long time ago, I only had a collapsible, but now have the DR. The difference is pretty pronounced between my examples. The DR is a more "modern" look, More contrast and better rendering of fine details. Still kind of 'Old glass" look in the prints. I don't know how it would be in color. I find the DR to be quite heavy, and I think I'd rather have the Rigid.

I have not really needed it often. I have a couple of different hood types if necessary including the most recent vented one. Try it without it. To be honest I sometimes put mine on partly for the "look" and partly to help protect the lens from accidental bumps.

I posted this recently on th e"show us your M " thread.

I've owned all versions except the rigid. I currently own the 4th because I had the current version but got the 4th in a trade upon comparison it to the newer one using Provia 100F, I preferred the Wetzlar lens (4th version).

The newer design allows closer focus, and has a shorter throw, so something to consider. The Dual Range is probably the "best" imho, ergonomically though for me it was not as friendly. With the newer hood attached, it was hard to move aperture ring which is thin and sits close to hood. And it is a heavier lens.

Here's a pic with DR

This is fascinating reading, to me. I will vote for the 50DR, as I had one twenty years ago, absolutely loved it. Now I am shoppin' for another 50 Summicron (once again) and I am considering the DR, the Rigid, and the Collapsible. Perhaps I will end up with more than one. :p

Hmmm... given the choices... I would choose the...

Version 6: Black with "50" & built-in hood.

However, my LSM/LTM collapsible 'cron [with an adapter] is simply terrific on my
M-series. I can use it with my Sooky-M and I can't distinguish it's performance from 'Version 6.'

I love my Summicron rigid V2 50mm/2.0. It is a classic performer, and subsequent changes/improvements were marginal if you take into account the overall rendering of images. It is just my opinion after having tested many 50mm lenses.

Raid,
I have been using my "new" V2 Rigid Summicron for a bit, after getting it recoated and cleaned by John Van Stelton, and I too am in love with mine. It's exactly the "look" I remember from having my DR twenty years ago. So I am very happy with my new acquisition.
