Your favourite photographers?

As mentioned elsewhere, don't forget William Mortensen, "disappeared" from most histories because of the baleful influence of Ansel Adams and his cronies.

Cheers,

R.

for me:
Arbus and 2 important influence's to her: Lisette Model & Louis Faurer
Ray Metzker
Saul Leiter
Daido Moriyama
and Trent Parke

Taken as an entire oeuvre, I feel the strongest connection to Harry Callahan. There are a few particular William Eggleston photos that might be my favorites.

For their stylistic portraiture, I like Yusef Karsh and Jeanloup Seiff.
For their documentary work and the ability to tell everything needed for a 30-minute newscast in a single photo, I like Philip Jones Griffiths, W. Eugene Smith and Benedict Fernandez.

And for going back when so many others wouldn't (including myself) my hat is off to all the US Navy and Marine Corps photographers, as well as the Army and Air Force photographic specialists.

Wolgang Tilmans

Some others.

Garry Winogrand, Walker Evans
Ed Weston for his darkroom work.
I'd say Capa but there is a lot of controversy surrounding his WWII work...

I also have personal connections to Mark Denton (who specializes in panoramic photography) and Matthew Weinreb.

Since I have come only recently to this wonderful world of photography I especially appreciate what a great reference this thread is. Working my way through the lists here will surely provide me with entertainment and enlightenment for some time to come and for that I thank all who contributed.

But my main reason for posting is to say that in checking out the work and repertoires of some of the photographers posting here I was delighted to find work suitable to be on anyone's list of favorite photography - most certainly on mine. The photography which regularly turns up here in the Rangefinder Forum gallery and on the threads strikes me as being every bit as good, and often better, than that to be found in esteemed museums, galleries and photography books. I am so impressed. And for that I owe everyone here on this great site yet more thanks.
