Nobuyoshi Araki is my favorite.

the others don't really fall in specific order: JL Sieff, Gibson, Salgado, Kenro Izu.

and I want to give special attention to our friend Bob, aka NoTraces, for whom I think the world of both his images and his character.

ManRay - discovered him when i was 14, blew my mind as i started discovering B&W darkroom development
Capa - same time discovery. Brave themes.
Bailey - style fantastic
Helmut Newton - Character
Trent Parke - defines Australia for me (as an Aussie)

No one has mentioned Michael Ackerman, so I will. Geoff Dyer once aptly described looking at an Ackerman photograph is like looking inside a photographer's head. Ackerman is also a great cure for GAS … I don't think he has ever taken a sharp photo.

Maier - An amazing story and an even more amazing sense of composition
Capa - A great attitude and the ability to take pictures when I would have peed my pants.
Lange and Evans - Their drive to communicate in images continues to inspire me.
Eggleston - I am not sure I always like his pictures but his understanding of color is awesome.
Leibovitz - Her images are terrific but I really love her continued willingness to experiment.
Sullivan - Stunning photographs of the American landscape far before Ansel was even dreamed of. And under much more difficult conditions.
Adams, Mortensen and Hicks - As much for their willingness to teach others as their photographs, which really are wonderful all on their own.

Lately I have been poring over Koudelka and Szarkowski's work.

There are so many others that I could just go on and on...but I better stop or I'll kill the thread. :)

In no particular order:-
  • Henri Cartier-Bresson
  • William Eggleston
  • Vivian Maier
  • J H Lartigue
  • Don McCullin
  • James Ravilious
  • Charlie Waite
  • Matt Stuart
I like the work all of these... however, I don't like ALL of the work of any of these.:)

Of course I like a lot of the photographers mentioned, but I'll throw in a couple not often mentioned:

Larry Towell
Benita Keller

Both taught me to value the people over the image...
