Sony today said it has broken a new barrier in cellphone cameras through an update to its Exmor sensors. The company has shrunk the pixel size to 1.4µm and now says it can produce a 12.25-megapixel, 28mm equivalent CMOS camera small enough to fit in some cellphones. The unit gives a cellphone the image quality and detail of a modern point-and-shoot camera, according to the company.

It also operates quickly enough to shoot 1080p video as quickly as 27 frames per second and 720p at a TV-level 30 frames per second as long as the processor and storage are also capable of the same speed.

The 12.25-megapixel sensor is large and is most likely to be reserved for dedicated camera phones when it ships, which isn't scheduled until March of next year. However, the company has also produced more compact 5.2- and 8.1-megapixel cameras whose lower resolution also lets them shoot full 30FPS 1080p video. The 5.2-megapixel unit will be available at the same time as the premium model in March, while the 8.1-megapixel equivalent is due slightly earlier in February.

Sony hasn't said whether it will reserve the Exmor cameras for its own Sony Ericsson phones or if it will let third-party firms build them into their own devices.

I've been thinking of adding an old crank phone with two bells at the top and a separate earpiece on the side to my 11x14" camera. I don't have a cellphone.

Leica is introducing a cell phone???????

Leica is introducing a cell phone???????

Wow, that's a bit of news... Kind of like that Nikon Digital Rangefinder rumor... or the RD-1 being re-introduced.

I'll be third in that line.

In fact, they could have done this some time ago, if they took the cellphone sizes back up to the analog wireless phones of a short time ago. I can see it now.. big old analog size phone and a battery pack on a shoulder sling.

10 MP cell phone cameras have been in Asia for over 2 years. This is an incremental move not a significant product change.

My problem is this camera might be better than my Canon S3 P/S or my Kiev 4A. With one of those cellphones I'd have no excuses and that would be bad.

Wow! That looks great, and not just for a cell phone camera! Thanks for sharing that.

Isn't that a trip!? Jeff's a stud with a camera, no matter what it is. He used to shoot weddings with Leica M film bodies, but he's a Canon shooter, now.

...why not a camera with an embedded phone... ?
It'll look nicer in one of Luigi's cases & you can talk in an *unobtrusive* & *discrete* manner... :)

Besides.. I lose more phones than cameras so it'll definitely be a plus (for me).
