Another thread got me thinking, or rather re-awoke an old thought - namely a curiousity to discover others personal definitions of art.

Mine is that art is anything that serves to highlight a universal truth of the human condition in some respect, thus for me any medium can really be subverted to the creation of art.

It is for above reason, I personally disagree with blanket statements/ assertions that this medium or that medium is not art. Equally, the universal part rules out creative efforts that only have personal significance, counting as art to me.

I'm curious - what is your personal definition of art..

Sim to what CNNY said. . . .

For me, "art" is an interpretation of reality ( not simply a recording of reality) or it can be utterly a fabrication of fantasy.

It is more easy to describe what isn't art.
BA has nothing to do with art, for example

Mine is probably the working man's definition but I will go with a heightened awareness of things seen or heard. Does that leave things out? We have heard about the sound in the forest, but is it art if there is no audience? i.e. is it art when it is created or only when it is received?

Art is something that is detectable with one or more of the five senses that, once detected, evokes a positive response and does not make me say, "That is a worthless piece of crap!":D

Here are some examples:
A painting by Monet, Van Gogh or Da Vinci
A symphony by Beethoven or Mozart
A Leica M camera that uses film
A Leica M lens
A photograph by Ansel Adams, Jim Brandenburg, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Constantine Manos or Steve McCurry
A wood and canvas canoe
A 1963 Corvette Spilt Window Coupe
A Supermarine Spitfire
A P-51 Mustang
A wooden sailboat
A perfectly grilled New York strip
A cold bottle of Tap Room 21 Copper Lager

All are quality of life issues (to me)...

Art is not truth, though it points to truth. Good art stirs the soul.

Reminds me of David Hurns/ Bill Jays definition of a good photograph - one that goes straight to the heart, and takes its time working its way to your brain :)

I once saw a sculpture of a a funny cat made out of cream cheese I thought was pretty good.

These are interesting.

So a couple of airplanes specifically designed to murder people are art? Or just good, fast airplanes that were gun platforms?

I'll bet a cow feels differently about that grilled strip steak.

I personally don't like Mozart, I think he needs some rhyming lyrics, maybe a laser light show.

If you've seen one Ansel Adams photo, you've seen them all.

For me, I think it's simply displaying what humanity is capable of. That's probably why I have a relatively negative view of a lot of what is called art these days, as it does not really reflect what humans can do if they put their minds to it.

Fortunately, art does not depend on any critics opinion of it.

Art, like morality, consists of drawing the line somewhere.
G. K. Chesterton (1874 - 1936)
---------------------------
Abstract art is a product of the untalented, sold by the unprincipled to the utterly bewildered.
Al Capp (1909 - 1979)

The name of one of my friends.
