your photos don't matter much, just bring your followers

Fortunately, your photos still matter. Few will be acquiring followers without producing compelling imagery in the first place. NGOs wouln't be doing this way because of trends, they will do it because it is effective in reaching the audience they are seeking. And if it is not effective, they will falter. Just like it always has been, finding success in your field will be a combination of talent, opportunity, and effort in an ever-varying cocktail.

While it's true that people won't follow photographers whose work is no good I would say that those who spend all their time reaching out for fans probably spend less time becoming good photographers. Or - they are people who have been in the business long enough to already have an established fan base.

So what they're really looking for is not photographers, but popular people who happen to be photographers.
