Which of these two systems would you rather take with you for a short vacation. I am looking for your preferences in regard to image quality and general usability .

Usage would be mostly street, environmental, portraits and some landscapes throw in.

1. Fuji XE1 with the Fuji 18mm and the 35mm.

2. Leica M8 with the cron 28 asph and the 50 asph.

Would appreciate your thinking between these two systems.

Best regards.

Never owned either, but as I like range finders, I'd take the M8. A 28mm and 50mm is a good combo, don't need much else I don't think.

If you already own both though, take both, unless you're happy not taking pictures, best to have a backup.

Hmm. I face this dilemma from time to time. In my mind, advantages of the Fuji are AF and high ISO. It really depends on your shooting style and subject matter. Between you, me and the rest of RFF when dithering over this, I usually just pack both.

This summer I will be photographing a dear friend's wedding. Cameras will be the M9 and the Nikon D3. The wedding will be one for the ages. The Fuji XP1 will stay at home.

The way I work, for street photography I prefer the M lenses and prefocusing. I find it easier to check on this with a quick glance down at the lens rather than fiddling with focus options and trusting the electronics in the camera to get it right. But I am sure there are some Fuji-jockies out there who have figured out how to make the camera do what they want.

I would take the M8 + 28/50, might even skip the 50. Regarding image quality, both can deliver. For general usability and ergonomics, the M8 clearly wins for me.

Hey guys, thank you so very much for the quick responses.

I have put them both in the bag, removed one, then the other. Decided on one..and then changed my mind.

All of you are correct...:bang:

I am intending to take a Sony RX 100 as a back up.

I hate to make such decisions.

Kindest regards.

Having gone last year on a 2.5 week trip over to Normandy and Paris I can tell you that the Fuji is excellent. I took the X-Pro1 and a Leica M7. The 35 and 18 for the fuji and the 21mm, 35mm, 50mm and 90mm for the Leica. This offered me the best of both worlds, digital and film.

Cheers,
Dave

I'd take the X-Pro1 over the M8 in a heartbeat, but the X-E1, maybe not. That OVF is really the key feature of the X-series cameras, and I just couldn't see myself shooting with an EVF all the time. The pure image quality will be better from the X-E1, but the experience of shooting may be lacking (I don't own the X-E1...I'm basing this on my use of of the EVF on my X-Pro1 and X100). And the more and more I shoot, the more I realize that it's the shooting experience that really makes the camera. The X-Pro1 offers a brilliant experience via it's hybrid OVF, as (of course) does the M8. For me, EVFs are not there yet. YMMV.

The Fuji 35 is really an extraordinarily good lens. Crazy sharp at f/1.4, great colours and contrast. The 18 is also terrific, though it's meant as a photojournalism lens, not a landscape lens (i.e. the corners aren't razor sharp at any f/stop).

I am grateful for all your suggestions. I shall be visiting Laos in a couple of days. Maybe some of you have been around that part of the world and had some valuable experience that you could share with me..as to the camera you carried.

Thank you all.

Get a Leica M adapter and take the X-E1 with the lenses you want. Manual focus lenses on the X-E1 is half the fun. Prefocusing, or zone focusing adds to the experience, especially on the street.

Depends on your favorite focal lengths. Before my trip 'round those parts I had a similar dilemma, ended up taking an M6, 60 rolls of film, a 50mm and a 35mm.

An M8 and the 28 might force you to go in a little closer.....

I have both, and would go for the M8. The Fuji, while great optically and in low light, is one of the most anemic cameras I have ever used. Even in manual, I find it sluggish. I keep it because of the quality of the files and when I need to reach for something I know it'll do well. I also find it to be be one of the most Leica-like cameras in terms of handling - a good thing. The M8, for all that is said and done, is still a viable user today. The files and optics are excellent. When you press the shutter, there is no hesitation.

Anyway, my two cents here is cheap. Use whatever you enjoy and can experience for yourself.

Whatever (AF) hesitation the X-E1 may have disappears when you mount an MF lens. ;)

Guys, none of you is easing my quandary.
I agree with each and every one of you!

Appreciate your input friends.

Best.

I have all 3 cameras mentioned (M9 instead of M8, x pro 1 instead of xe1 though, well, close enough)
I personally will pack an M8/9 with 28 & 50 only (or just a 35) when I travel
; will also consider bringing Fuji if I plan to take pics in low light
; will also consider bringing RX100 if I like to be in pictures, in focus.
