If you ever thought your 300/f4 lens wasn't all that great for bird and wildlife photography, and you've always wanted extremely low DOF in those head-and-shoulders portrait shots from half a mile away, Zeiss has revealed just the lens for you: the Zeiss 1700/f4 (German link, English link).

Weight 256 kg, covers 6x6, comes with a Hasselblad 206 FE attached. Nice to get an idea of the scale of this thing.

Now only one question remains: Where is the M mount version?
EDIT: Wrote "link" next to the link, added English link thanks to Nachkebia

Wow! got a link I can send my Canon wielding friends who drool over the lame EF 1200/5.6L?

Edit:

Is there a press release or an official site with some pictures of this ? I cant find anything :/

I've edited the text now for better link visibility and added the English link Nachkebia had posted.

(I'm prepared for the thundering roars of "Who cares" once again, however, I guess it's a bad idea to have a stylesheet where links look just like plain text and then suddenly hop around when you accidentally hover your mouse over them).

Autofocus? You'd need a portable generator to have enough power to move all of that glass!
For the reference, the thing weights in at quarter ton already, so 50 kg of a generator wouldn't make much difference :)

(And no, I wasn't suggesting AF there for serious)

Focusing apparently is servo controlled anyway in this thing according to the text, so autofocus wouldn't be an issue?

I actually have one of these and like using it for some street shots.

Just so you have an idea of the scale here is a recent photo of me on the photo-shooting in Lueneburg

I guess it's a special order item for some rich guy from the Gulf or so who is looking for ways to spend lots of money. (But the Arabic only means "super tele lens" anyway.)

Who was that mor...err...individual that said that telephotos are for whimps? Yeah, only whimps would be hauling that around.

Or does it come with valet service?

I'm sure you can really see what that lion had for dinner with this.

It is interesting that there is Arabic writing on one side of this lens.

From the article, it says it was custom built for a customer who requested it. So, think about who could pay for that... Oil money.

probably at least a half-mil, maybe more?...
