I have did modification on 2 jupiter-8 : cleaning, shimming & collimating, (thanks to Brian Sweney !! his pdf file helps a lot). at the end I get one GREAT copy of this lens (after swapping some lens element with the other), and one junk lens which both already collimated perfectly.

a friend of mine is offering me kiev (??) with carl zeiss opton 50mm f2 sn 8233xx (6 digit), and CZJ 85mm f2 SN??, jupiter 12, and one 53mm f1.8 (??) russian lens.

from what I heard, Jupiter-8 LTM is "exact" copy of zeiss 50mm sonnar. I wonder if I can get the Opton 50mm f2 zeiss only and use it in my junk jupiter-8 body.

I have googled around and found that Brian Sweney as well has done that conversion several times. my worries is I don't know if my friend's Opton lens can be mounted to Jupiter-8 body. any body know if my friend's opton serial number can be use ?

thanks for your reply! Brian, can you share more about this ?

The Zeiss Opton optics modules will not fit into a J-8 shell. The design is different, and the back of the optics module has a much bigger diameter.

I have seen a Zeiss Opton 50/2 converted to LTM using a Nikkor 5cm F2 focus mount, but custom machining was required. I tried converting a Zeiss Opton 50/1.5 to LTM using a Summarit focus mount, but the back was too big. I suspect the 50/2 would work.

Fall and Winter is my "project time". I've collected several 50mm focus mounts and will be trying some new hacks. I also have a spare Zeiss Opton 50/2 and will be trying to adapt it. BUT: it is likely to require a Canon or Leica focus mount.

The Design of the CZJ 8.5cm F2 did not fit into a J-9 mount, again the shape of the back of the optics module was changed. So far, the pre-war and wartime (SN under 3M) CZJ 5cm F2 fits into a J-8 mount and the CZJ 5cm F1.5 fits into a J-3 mount.

Thanks Brian,
but I still confuse about what you've said.

does it need to be "CZJ" (without "OPTON" writen on the lens) with SN < 3M to fit J8 ? well, because my friend opton SN is <3M but you said it can't be mounted on J8, so kind of contradict for me.

I thought CJZ and Opton is the same module/design, just different name because of different selling area.

It must be "Carl Zeiss Jena 5cm F2" with a SN below 3million to fit on the J-8 focus mount, and "Carl Zeiss Jena 5cm F1.5" to fit on the J-3 mount. The post-war, post 1945 lenses with SN above 3million, will not work- whether they say "Carl Zeiss Jena", "Carl Zeiss Opton", or "Carl Zeiss".

The "Carl Zeiss Opton" and "Carl Zeiss" lenses are West German, the post war "Carl Zeiss Jena" lenses are East German. All of the Post War lenses, East and West Germany are new designs with new construction. They have larger diameter optics than the pre-war and wartime lenses.

For the F2 lens: the Optics Module from the collapsible lens will fit in the J-8. If it is a Rigid lens, most likely it will not fit.

This is the optics module from the Collapsible CZJ 5cm F2 Sonnar, which will go into a J-8:

a very helpful reply. thanks a lot Brian !!
too bad I can't use my friend's lens..

when I search on eb*y, looks like the collapsible lens is only 50mm f2, I never see any 50mm f1.5 which are collapsible. I assume ALL "RIGID" 50mm f1.5 CZJ <3M are nice match for J-3 body... anyway, thanks for the explanation !!

all of the 5cm f1.5 lenses are "Rigid", and the ones under SN 3Million will work in a J-3 focus mount. I've converted 12 5cm F1.5 lenses and 8 5cm F2 lenses.
