Zeiss Biogon T* 35/2,8 ZM and 3d pop

Hi,

I have heard/read about this "3d pop" that Zeiss have or had. Does this new lens have that same recipe to do that to? Anyone know?

And I bought my first Leica (black M6) this weekend and am about to buy my first lens, like the "3d pop" thing, but why Zeiss over Leica for this ?

I checked the thread and that was the one that informed me about the "3d pop" and after that I surfed Google and found allot more. Great thread btw! I really love your picture Nigel and the picture of the bush by Strangeluv and the carnival girl by CrisR.

Someone said that it was some micro contrast and non-linearity of the Zeiss recipe that made this the Zeiss effect/3d pop.. Leica was supposed to have some more linearity on there lenses that made them more "flatish". Don't know how much fact there is in that thou.

If you look through the long thread on Leica M portraits here, to me the two technological stars are the M9, and the 50 Summilux ASPH. That lens has pop. The earlier dreamier lower contrast Leica lenses are different. So Zeiss is not the only one with lenses that have this 3d effect.

I think the concepts of what pop is are hard to grasp. Supposedly it relates to micro contrast, a fine gradation of tones from one point to the next point close by, moulding the 3 dimensional structure in focus rather than it presenting as a flat evenly illuminated shape. Nigel's photo has that:

Strangeluvs picture of the bush is a Zeiss C-Biogon 35mm 2.8 is that the same one as the Zeiss Biogon T* 35/2,8 ZM svart ? Am not so familiar with the Zeiss names yet.

Beacuse it's the Zeiss Biogon T* 35/2,8 ZM I am about to purchase.

Richard G so my combination of tri-x and rodinal at 1:100 will maby not add on to the effect, maby a Nanopan 100 will be better ?

Found some info, the C stands for Compact and the ZM says it´s for Leica mount.

Yep, there is only one ZM 35mm C-Biogon f 2.8. so people are in effect referring to the same lens however they term it.
The lens stands up against any 35mm lens out there and is remarkably good at max aperture. The picture above was taken at f2.8 Add to that the fact that it's inexpensive compared to many other 35mm lenses including the Leica 35mm Summarit f2.5
I had both and sold the Summarit. Of course the next person may keep the Summarit in favour of their Biogon, it's all subjective but for me this lens just works so well. You can also near enough buy a C- Biogon and a Zeiss 50mm Planar for the price of a Summarit!

"Nanopan", now I'm intrigued to know where you are buying that stuff! 😉

Haffy you might also take a look at getting one of these hoods for your lens rather than the Zeiss one. CrisR a member here is the designer. I have one on my lens. I'm using the Wide Universal hood.

3D Pop is a bit like Leica-glow 🙂

The influence of light, contrast, distance, etc. are more important for a 3D effect than the lens. But I have to admit that The 35/2 Distagon (for F-Mount) surprised me with the way sharp objects are depicted in front of not so sharp out of focus areas.

So I am sure that sharpness, contrast and maybe micro contrast play a part here.
My C-Biogon should be here any day now, but the M4 is still waiting for her new strap lugs... 🙂

Hehe, you bought a holy-grail too 🙂 Nice to know that so many of you more experienced guys buy it, then I will not be dissapointed.
I think this will be a big leap for me as I only have owned Nikon 1.8 G lenses and tried some Canon EF at work (an Hasselblad, but they are in a different league).

haffy, there's probably one and only one reason not to buy the c-biogon 35: a need for a wider aperture. in every other way, it's wonderful. i think you're wise to buy new. occasionally, ZM lenses develop play in the focus ring, wobble in the front ring, and a couple other problems that a warranty will cure.
