Zeiss Ikon Broken Adavanced crank SOS!!!

Hey all,

So I was on my track bike with a friend at the beach cruising on the boardwalk talking about art and life. I lost my balance and fell over on my camera (Zeiss Ikon). It has the 35mm 2.5 PII lens on it with hood, and the hood got a little dented. Everything else seems to be find except the advance crank. It seems to not advance the film making the shutter not go off. I'm going to take it to get fixed in the morning but was wondering if this happened to anyone else before?

Nope, and I hope it never does. It sounds serious. Would be interested to know what your repairer finds.

Ouch. Sorry to hear that. Hope you are OK. Fixie and SPDs?

I hope it's not too serious - may just be something jammed that frees up easily. Was the RF knocked out of alignment or did it survive that?

It looks like the alignment seems to be fine. However my repair guy says it's the shutter that may be broken. He said if he can fix it it will be $40.00. If he has to replace it he said $180.00. My heart is broken. He said it should be done in about two weeks and he will let me know what will be the problem once they examine it in a few days. 🙁

My ZM shows the same symptoms if the sprockets are moved a little bit when inserting a film. If I then slightly move the sprockets (I hear a faint "click"), the lock disengages and everything works fine again.

Ok, this is different than a fallen camera but it could well be that the bash resulted in a similar locking situation.

With any due respect to your repair guy, there's just no way anyone is going to fix a shutter fault for $40. Just the time taken to dismantle the camera sufficiently would account for more that that. And I don't think he could replace it for $180 either.

We are talking about a ZM here aren't we, not some other Zeiss Ikon?

Sorry but this just doesn't sound right somewhere.

I think Johannes might have a point. It does sound as if the rewind release button is stuck in which could be an easy fix.

Yea he said it could be the rewind release button. He didn't check it out yet but he'll let me know.

So turns out the mechanic said that my rewind mechanism had to be repaired. He also has to CLA it as well. Total $180.00.

Send it to Zeiss. They may even repair it for free - they're really good with that sort of thing. I wouldn't trust some random repairs guy to fix a camera with a specific shutter mechanism.

What is there to CLA in the Ikon? It's a repair, replace camera.

Did you ask why it needs a CLA? And did you ask if he's ever CLAed a ZM before? I really have my doubts about it.

No I didn't ask that at all, he actually said that he had to re-adjust the focusing tab as it was unaligned and fix the rewind mechanism as it broke. He actually finished everything up. Once I go down to pick it up I'll ask him a few questions again about the repairs to get more details, or call before I go in. I figured it was a CLA since it means Clean, Lube, Adjust (ajust the focus tab etc).
