Here are two links for anyone interested in the new Zeiss Ikon.

shphoto.de are quoting the camera for a price that is standard to what I have seen quoted elsewhere, but they have an [apparently time limited] offer on the lenses which makes for quite a discount.

For those outside the EU region:

For those of you inside the EU region the price includes 16% tax:

Auf Deutsche mit 16% MwST Inklusiv:

I'm not that brave to go ahead and purchase the camera body w/o first hearing some user reviews. Although the huge viewfinder intrigues me, I query how the eletronics will operate in the field (i.e., Are there any glitches).

I also wonder if the ZI is just a little bit late -- many folks are anticipating the next generation of digital rangefinders. The window of opprotunity may be fast closing.

I also believe that Leica's recent price increase on July 1 encourgaged many potential customers who were on the fence regarding purchasing new items to go for Leica, as it may be the last time many of us could afford new Leica. For example, I obtained, at dealer cost, a second body and two new lenses from a dealer who was liquidating his Leica stock. Even at dealer cost, that was alot of money, and it has probably removed me as a potential ZI customer.

I believe ZI may have made a mistake in not getting it's lenses and a sample camera reviewed prior to production being on line. A fovorable review or two in a legitimate photo rag would have gone a long way in cooling the heels of potential customers.

Anyway, just my random thought.

sgy1962: I understand and respect your logic in acquiring a Leica at a good price before the price increase. I would have chosen differently. I have no problem with trusting Zeiss' design and QA capabilities in prospect for a ZI that has features/advantages that trump a Leica. I don't think Zeiss made a mistake in not getting a favourable review prior to production. Given that they want to get it right/perfect, I agree with waiting until the conditions are right. I'd rather have raving reviews, not, "good but..."

I doubt there's much overlap between people moved to buy new Leica gear due to the price increases and potential buyers of the ZI & lenses. I've been using Leica cameras & lenses for over 30 years and have never bought anything new except lens caps. Price boosts on gear I thought was already overpriced had no effect on this. ;)

The ZI camera is more reasonably priced. I'm interested but have no pressing need for it. So I'll wait & see how initial buyers like it and also if any glitches show up. Then I'll decide if the camera is right for me.

The lenses I'm more interested in. I loved the Zeiss G lenses (though not so much the cameras), and judging by the 35 & 50mm the new lenses have the same contrast & color characteristics as the Gs but with smoother out-of-focus rendition. I own the new 50mm and will probably get the 28mm later this year.
