Zeiss Ikon Sale!

hm....I think there is room for all the players but I think that all of them are too expensive for the most part.

There is not a lot of mark up on Camera bodies, taking another look at the MSRP Adorama advertised and the sale price. They must be losing money on each one, the real money is in the lenes.

ZI received

I am pleased to post my first message to this forum to announce that I received my $999.95 ZI silver limited edition body (product number 30 81035) yesterday from Adorama. As a Bessa R and Rollei 35 RF owner who has never held a Leica M camera but once owned a Contaflex Super B, I will make a few comments that I hope will be of interest. I thought it interesting to note on the top plate that the serial number is designated "Ser.No.," while the Limited Edition number is "Nr."

My initial impression out of the box is that this is an elegant, beautifully designed camera. The extent of the viewfinder coverage is quite unique and actually exceeds that of my Nikon F3HP. Others have noted that the shutter speeds can be hard to see and I agree, though I think that is partly a function of getting used to the viewfinder. A Voigtlander 35mm f/2.5 MC and 50mm f/1.5 Nokton with adapter, and Rollei Sonnar 40mm f/2.8 all mount nicely with a solid click.

The included strap is closer in quality to that included with a Bessa body than the very nice thick leather one that comes with the Rollei 35 RF. I am hard pressed to imagine what you would do with the very nice leather wallet with magnetic closure that holds the body but will not accomodate a mounted lens. A Bessa case does fit with a bit of fiddling.

In the box is also a slip of paper noting "Register your new Zeiss Ikon Limited Edition Camera Body with Hasselblad USA and we will send you a special commemorative crystal paperweight as our token of appreciation!" I've mailed my registration and we'll see what happens with that.

The shutter has a precise "snick" sound to it that is hard to describe. The film advance lever and rewind crank are solid. Fit and finish is excellent. I'm looking forward to running some film through this during the holiday. Keith

Congrats, KR.

Hassey isn't the distributor anymore. They may still honour the "crystal" offer but I wonder who will handle warranty work if bought from Adorama?

But look at Adorama's price on lenses. The 50mm Planar is $835, Popflach is $600. The only bargin is the silver body.

Looks like Zeiss USA pulled the plug on Adorama for selling these ZM bodies at a REALLY great price.

Well maybe I am a reactionary, but I will never buy a camera with a battery dependent shutter at any price. This to me is the big dissapointment of the new Zeiss. I am grateful for the new lenses though even though I can't afford them till they really hit the used market.
