Hello everyone! let's cut to the chase and get down to it. I bought a used ZI on the 'bay and it came in great condition. On my first day taking it out for real, the shutter speed dial assembly came apart. Rather, a screw holding the dial together came loose and now that screw is missing (see part number 7 in the diagram).

I've contacted my closest Zeiss rep and he has ordered the parts which was great. But my big concern right now is how to make sure all the settings are in correct alignment after the dial is secured.

Basically when I screw everything back into place how do you make sure the correct shutter speed and ISO is selected. Has anyone else had this problem or has any kind of info that could possibly help me out?

The cam is out of warranty and I would like to avoid sending it in for factory repair as much as possible (would have to send to Germany and I already have to wait till Jan. just to get the parts). Functionally, it is in great condition and I don't consider the seller at fault for the screw coming loose, just an unfortunate accident...think you guys can help me out?

In terms of the shutter speeds, perhaps try to put the camera in "A", aperture-preferred automatic. That should be pretty easy to find by seeing how the meter responds in the viewfinder window. Not sure what to do about the ISO dial, though.

I can see how this screw is easy to come loose and make a big mess. It would be a good idea to tighten it regularly.

When reassembling a camera, I usually temporarily assembly the dial so I can rotate the speed to "B". It should be pretty easy to tell then how the dial goes back together.

I had this same thing happen to my ZI. Fortunately I did not lose any pieces and just have a local camera guy reassemble it. I was out of town the the camera repair guy I used had never seen a modern Zeiss Ikon before but it still only took him about 5 minutes to do.

I've pulled apart and reassembled the Ikon shutter speed dial. The ISO dial can go on one of two ways (180 degrees apart). As long as you get that right (its obvious by looking at the ISO numbers), everything else goes back in a predetermined position - impossible to screw up.

Is there any special tool for the top screw or just any pin wrench?

Thanks everyone! this info has been very helpful. now I just have to wait till January for the Zeiss office to get my parts with their next factory shipment haha. 3 weeks to go!

does anyone know what kind of screw Zeiss uses to secure the dial? like what diameter and thread count (or TPI) do they use? is it metric?

On a seperate note, where did you get the diagram from in your post? Do you have assembly drawings for the ZI?
