Zeiss ZM Price Drop

Wow, price on ZI body from B&H lowest than I think I've ever seen it before. I'd be so tempted if I had the pennies, but can't justify it right now.

So does that mean ZI warranty when item purchased from B&H is 2 years, but for PopFlash it's 1 year? I personally would trust stuff like making sure RF alignment OK to an outfit like PopFlash, but if there is in fact such a difference in warranty....

EDIT: I see B&H is listing a 1 year warranty too.

I have NEVER had a problem with a B&H purchase in 30 years, that said if I were to buy a Zeiss Ikon camera it would be from POPFLASH. Just as I have gotten all my CV stuff from Cameraquest and Photovillage.

Could someone tell me where that grey market firm in Hong Kong is ?

There are loads in HK. I've also had excellent service (and price) from the ebay seller Matsuiyastore. They speak excellent English and stock all sorts of rangefinder goodies

I second the recommendation for Matsuiyastore. Excellent prices, very fast shipping, great communication. (No connection - just a customer.)

When in HK I've bought most of my grey market stuff at Tin Cheung Camera in TST in Kowloon.

Thanks for the replies guys, lots of interesting stuff there at Matsuiyastore. Although the Zeiss lenses are not really cheaper than B&H; maybe the store is a bit light grey - Zone IIX grey ? ;)

Cheers,

javabean.

My vote and money is now even more going right to Zeiss, the price drop has made the gray market less appealing, and the 2 year warranty is IMO a great thing to have. Zeiss gave me Great service when my Planar needed it, and I'd rather pay for the warranty service potential.

That said I've NEVER had any Contax G lens, Zeiss or Nikon lens I ever bought need fixing within the first 2 years of ownership

Ha, here I was thinking I'v never still owned any lens I've bought 2 years after I bought it :). There is always new gear to buy, new things to try, with the resale value of gear quite high I never hold on to gear that long. I never buy local, always grey market, heck my D200 was grey market, never one problem.

What was the service that your Planar needed?

My Planar 50mm ZM had the wobble, and the focus bind with the hood not quite on all the way, and there was some various debris and a spot of fungus starting inside. Mind you, I use my Leicas very hard, I'm a hard charging PJ style all film old school wedding photographer, so stuff gets whacked about. I got the lens very soon after it came out, from a west coast dealer that gave me the warranty thru Hasselblad (yeah, it was that long ago) and so I had to send it to Hasselblad in NJ and thats where it sat for quite a while, I think it was around the time when Zeiss and Hasselblad split their ZM agreement. So, like a month or two goes by, and I hear nothing, I get a letter in the mail saying the lens was 'recieved' a full month After I sent it (saved the shipping, you never know) and that they'd let me know. Another span of time past, I gave a call and the very helpful gent at Hasselblad said it probably went off to Germany (!) to be done., but he doesn't know where it is. Days, weeks pass, and on this fine Rangefinder Forum I spy the post of the New Zeiss liason, and I send him an email to which I got a near instantanous reply, and within a week he had the lens location all sorted out and let me know the moment it was back on its way, which was very soon, less than two weeks. Once Zeiss's Richard Schleuning got on the case, it was all better. There is nothing better than having the company who makes the gear provide the warranty and repair of it. And BTW, the lens came back perfect, it still has my brassing marks (told you I'm hard) but the wobble is gone, elements are clean and I'm sure that it focusses even smoother. Zeiss gets my warranty dollars for sure.

all the more tempted to get zeiss, even though here in china grey market dealers are still a hell of a lot cheaper, for instance a zeiss 50 f2 can be had for about 430 dollars with the one year warrenty

Great prices Tony. Shame I'm not in the US (or more accurately, shame its so tricky to avoid Her Britannic Majesty's Revenue & Customs officers :()

I knew someone had the 2-year warranty, but I thought it was Zeiss. I learned that it's not.

Knowing that it's you, Tony, who has the 2 years, I'll buy from Popflash for any future Zeiss purchases. The 2-years is vewry valuable & your reputation for customer service speaks for itself! :)

I think it's a shame you had to react to this person's attitude. People should be happy to pay a couple of extra dollars for your kind of great service, and help keep you in business. Profit margins on camera gear are so low now...
