ZI exposure compensation question

Hi all. When you're shooting with the Zeiss Ikon in "automatic" exposure mode, can you use the shutter speed dial to dial in exposure compensation? It looks as though the dial is marked for 1/3 stop increments, is that true?

I'm trying to choose between the ZI and an M7...Thanks! 😀

Yes, exposure compensation can be applied for up to 2 stops in 1/3 stop increments with the shutter speed dial.

You're in aperture priority AE when you use exposure compensation, so you choose your compensation setting & leave the dial alone. The camera sets the shutter speed for you, you choose the aperture.

So the answer is no, you can't use the shutter speed dial for anything else when it is set in exposure compensation, but then there is no need to. If you move it off exposure compensation, you are either moving to "A" (regular AE without compansation) or to manual & are selecting your own shutter speed.

Yes, the dial is set for 1/3 stop increments of exposure compensation, but shutter speeds are continuous (stepless) in AE so the speed might actually be slightly off what you set for even more accurate exposure. If you want a specific shutter speed, then you choose manually. FWIW the ZM lenses also have aperture settings in 1/3 stop increments

Yes, you have 2 stops of compensation in 1/3 stop increments.

As for the ZI & M7, there are a few major differences. The ZI's 28mm framelines are useable with glasses, the ZI costs less, the metal shutter is more accurate, but louder, & the exposure compensation is at the top dial instead of on the back. The ZI doesn't have a self-timer or automatic DX film speed setting. The ZI is also lighter than the M7.
