edit: I checked and yep, the thumbnail is only clickable if you access the thread through the forums section.

Just found out myself (as I never enter threads from the Top News Stories)... when you enter a thread from the Top News Stories there's box near the top "Extras". From there click "Forum View" and you'll be taken to the actual thread. From there attached images can be viewed properly.
It seems a bit useless to have 2 different views, depending on how you enter a thread. Perhaps it's more useful to have the Top News Stories connect straight with the actual thread.
